More About the Author

W. H. McDonald Jr.
AKA Bill McDonald

The story telling and poetry writing of ancient spiritual warriors has a long tradition - the Vietnam War was a continuing part of that long creative experience for this author. His poetry and stories in his many books are a direct result of Bill McDonald's own experience with that part of his life. Bill McDonald, served in Vietnam in 1966-67. He was a crew chief/door-gunner on Huey helicopters (UH-1D). He was with the 128th Assault Helicopter Company. He was awarded numerous medals, including: The Distinguished Flying Cross, The Bronze Star, 14 Air Medals and the Purple Heart. He was wounded and his helicopters were shot down several times during his "tour-of-duty".

McDonald graduated with his BA degree from the University of San Francisco. He also has an AA degree from San Jose City College. He went back to Vietnam in 2002, with a small group known as "The Peace Patrol" - to a warm welcome from his former enemies. He wrote about that experience in 2003 in his first book "A Spiritual Warrior's Journey".

He has had many of his poems and stories published in national publications ( including Parade Magazine 10/06/02) and books. (i.e. - "Angels in Vietnam - Women Who Served" ; "Spinning Tales" ). He was also part of a documentary film crew that recorded interviews across the country in the fall of 2002, dealing with the effects of the Vietnam War and the Huey helicopter experience called, "In The Shadow of The Blade". The film premiered at the LBJ Presidential Library on November 8, 2003 in Austin, Texas. He has since produced, or been a part of four other documentary films that have been shown on PBS TV, The Pentagon Television Network and The Military Channel. He was recently involved with a documentary film shot in india (to be shown on Warner Brothers Cable TV Network) that deals with spiritual issues. He is also working on a DVD about his trip back to Vietnam in 2002.

He has written an autobiography that deals with his life experiences, not only in Vietnam, but both before and afterwards - "A Spiritual Warrior's Journey" . It is his spiritual experiences and the supernatural events that surrounds his life that makes his writing totally unique amongst writers.

He is a nationally known inspirational speaker. He has been an advocate for veteran's rights and the treatment of PTSD veterans. He is also a chaplain and minister for many non-profit groups and organizations. He also speaks to various spiritual organizations across the country about yoga, ESP, angels, NDEs, healing powers and psychic abilities.

His web site "The Vietnam Experience" www.vietnamexp.com has had over 30 million visitors since 1998 and continues to be among the most visited of its genre on the internet.

His acclaimed poetry book "Purple Hearts" deals with poetry from the Vietnam War and is available to organizations to sell for fund raising.

His award winning poetry book "Sacred Eye - Poetry in Search of the Divine" won a $25,000 marketing and promotional award from Booksurge Publisher (March 2004).

Bill works with several non-profit foundations doing projects for the people of Vietnam and world peace. He also helps veterans and their families through his Support Network and other PTSD organizations.

He has worked on many other books for authors as a ghost writer and is currently working on a series of books on yoga with a yoga master and author.

He is currently working on a new non-fiction book that continues his life story from 2003 when he left Peru and his travels to India in search of enlightenment and his near death experiences.

He is the founder of two of the biggest author organizations in north America - The Military Writer's Society of America (MWSA) http://www.militarywriters.com/ and The American Author's Association (AAA) http://www.americanauthorsassociation.com/.

He has been been a successful internet radio show host (K-DADE Radio - over 650,000 world wide monthly listeners in 2006) and has appeared and been interviewed by over 300 radio and TV stations and newspapers since 2001.

Bill was born in San Francisco, California and was raised on the west coast - living in California, Oregon, and Hawaii. He was a surfer, SCUBA Diver Instructor, and Lifeguard in his early days. Spent over 30 years in management with the USPS and retired in early 2001 as a Safety Manager. He now lives with his wife of 40 years in Elk Grove, California. His two children are all grown up and he has three grandchildren. He spends part of each year away in India at an ashram in the jungles outside of Pune. When he is back in the USA - he takes off for several months on the road helping non-profit organizations and promoting events and other authors. 5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I Have Ever Read!, May 13, 2004
This review is from: A Spiritual Warrior's Journey: The Inspiring Life Story of a Mystical Warrior (Paperback)
This book will inspire and amaze you - it did me! It was hard to put down once I began to read Bill McDonald's life story. This is so different than anything I have ever read in my whole life. His story is one of a kind. What he did in Vietnam alone could be a whole book by itself.

He is a true hero. His compassion and love of life shines through in every page of his book. This book will change lives as it has mine already. His life is one of great adventures and spirituality - it kind of reads like "Rambo Meets God while in the Twilight Zone". I would love to meet this author sometime and hear him talk about some of the things he has written about in his book.

A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE! Very healing book for veterans or anyone who has over come life problems. This book will give you many things to think about and question. Nothing will seem the same after you read it. This book is life altering!

5.0 out of 5 stars A memoir that makes you reconsider what "reality" is, March 23, 2004
This review is from: A Spiritual Warrior's Journey: The Inspiring Life Story of a Mystical Warrior (Paperback)
Most memoirs written by Vietnam vets focus primarily on their time in Vietnam. Bill McDonald doesn't tell his story that way; he chose to let us get to know him first as a child, a child who had a very harsh and traumatic childhood, but who, despite that, was able to grow into the good and decent man that he is today. The book is written as a series of short stories, describing significant incidents in his life, up to the present. I was compelled to begin jotting down words that best described the feelings the story evoked. When I was done, I realized that my list would serve as an excellent review all by itself, especially since Jan Hornung's Foreward does such a great job of describing the book that any sort of prose I would write to try to explain it wouldn't do as good a job.

Words to describe "A Spiritual Warrior's Journey": Compelling, Heartbreaking, Inspiring, Mesmerizing, Unforgettable, Well written, Uplifting, Appalling, Chill-bump raising, Awe-inspiring poetry, Horrifying, Amazing, Thought provoking, Bittersweet, Irritating, Serene, Shameful, Heartwarming, Scary, Eerie, Touching, "Reality" challenging, Reconciliating, Moving, Joyful, Peaceful, A must-read.
