More About the Author

Don Hands was born in Brooklyn,attended Regis High School and then joined the Jesuit Order for 9 years. He left before Ordination and got a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and found a new faith home in the Episcopal Church. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1979. He worked with impaired clergy of all faiths in a Wisconsin residential treatment center for 7 years, then worked for 17 years as a psychologist counseling inmates in the WI prison system, retiring in 2009 as Psychology Director. He lives in Milwaukee and is active as a Chaplain and college instructor.

This is a concise but excellent review of how and why clergy burn-out and the ways in which to keep them (us) spiritually healthy. Some hands-on suggestions follow the summary of the psychological factors. Great insights!

Although its an older book, the content remains very important because clergy have failed in knowing themselves and self care. Great book for any clergy.

Interesting study on clergy; its value is on the general weaknesses and strengths of clergy. It has some practical discernment for those seeking ministry and some of the pitfalls.
