The Spirituality of Communion: A New Approach to the Johannine Writings [Paperback]

Book Description

October 1998
The Gospel of John has often times been accused of fostering a spirituality focused on self. The writer of John was fond of using the verb, "to contemplate" and as a consequence many have drawn the conclusion that the Christian spiritual life is only being "alone with the Alone." With this important work Ross is forwarding a contemporary reading of the Gospel of John and the Letters of John. He believes that "the evangelist is calling upon us to live our relationship with God, our life of faith, in and together with the community of believers, thereby championing a 'spirituality of communion.'" In John's perspective everything promotes a life in oneness, in unity. Jesus brings together the scattered children of God in order that they may live the life of oneness of the Divine Persons. Ross's approach is modern, positive and refreshing. It opens new horizons to the future of humanity, a future where God works with and through people united in love.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"John's gospel insists that each individual must receive life from Jesus. Ross's work correctly and helpfully shows that this relationship is not private. It is within the context of the community: the community of the Father with the Son, and the community of believers with the Son. This is an important spiritual contribution to Johannine studies." -- Raymond E. Brown, Union Theological Seminary, NYC

"The author has mastered his theme, and writes clearly and at a level that can be easily understood. He knows and uses current international Johannine scholarship in an impressive way. The theme is very important, not only for Johannine studies but also for ecclesiology today. And yet there is no recent treatment of the theme in much depth." -- Daniel Harrington, S.J. Author, Weston School of Theology
