Editorial Reviews

Review

“This is a good book for people who like reading books about spiritual growth.  It’s even better for people who don’t! If you’ve ever thought that maybe you “just weren’t the spiritual type,’ this book’s for you.”
-John Ortberg

“Rich wisdom brilliantly communicated by a very talented writer. Takes the blinders off and opens your eyes to some strange and unique ways God works.”
-Stephen Arterburn

“This book will speak to everyong who has ever felt ‘left out’ spiritually. Larry’s insights cut through the commonly accepted, guilt-induced world of religion as he caputures the raw essence of New Testament relationship.”
-Craig Groeschel

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, May 16, 2009
This review is from: Spirituality for the Rest of Us: A Down-to-Earth Guide to Knowing God (Paperback)
This is the same book as "A Contrarian's Guide to Knowing God" by the same author. They added questions at the end of each chapter so you can use it for a group discussion. (They were formerly available online). It's not as good of paper as the first book, but the information makes up for it. I found this book to be a refreshing look at having a relationship with Christ if you're not wired to journal, read theology every day, and pray for hours. The book addresses the fact that most Christian books are written by bookworms, and therefore see everything from that perspective. I, being an artistic ADD type (some might call me "flaky":) who loves Jesus Christ was encouraged to know I wasn't alone. My faith is legitimate as those who are wired to be scholars. If you're a bookworm, I'd recommend the reading to see how the other half thinks.

Our Sunday School class is using this in our class and are really enjoying the discussion that Larry Osborne stimulates. Larry was in the High School group at our church so it is a delight to use his book as we know his parents well. Great book. I recommend it for anyone on their spiritual journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book Under a New Name, August 3, 2009
This review is from: Spirituality for the Rest of Us: A Down-to-Earth Guide to Knowing God (Paperback)
I read "Contrarian's Guide to Knowing God" and loved it. I got a copy for my pastor, and he loved it, too. The book forced me to rethink so many things I had grown up just assuming were true, because that's how I was taught. I've been following Larry Osborne's blog, too, and appreciate what he has to say. I've quoted him a few times on my blog.

So when I saw that Larry Osborne had another book, "Spirituality for the Rest of Us," I ordered it on Amazon. It arrived today. Browsing through the table of contents, I realized it was the exact same book as "A Contrarian's Guide to Knowing God," except that they threw in some study questions. Even in all the tributes from Christian leaders, they substituted this new book name for the previous one. Buying on Amazon, I didn't notice the note on the cover and copyright page saying this book was previously published as "A Contrarian's Guide to Knowing God."

So I unknowingly bought a third copy of this book. I'll give it away, and somebody will profit from it. But is it really necessary to change the title of a book that's only been out two years?

This book is a must read. You'll read through it and discover that Osborne is verbalizing many things you hadn't before because you'd been taught to believe otherwise. Read more
