No vocalist's repertoire is complete without at least a few well-known spirituals, and Burliegh is the best. The book provides a combination of well known songs with many that I bet you'v never heard of. Challenging to sing because of the depth and conviction required to sing efeectively, spirituals are a great teaching tool

As a K-12 credentialed music teacher and professional singer, this book has been a go to resource for me for the past 15 years. The spirituals work well for elementary age choirs through professional level vocalists. I've heard Kathleen Battle perform one of the arrangements from this book. And the catchy historical tunes are sure to impress audiences every time.
