Book Description

General Aviation April 15, 1996
As much a national hero as Wellington, Nelson or Montgomery, the Supermarine Spitfire has become the most recognisable icon of World War 2 for several generations of Britons. From the throaty growl of its Rolls-Royce Merlin, or Griffon, to its beautifully tapered elliptical wings, the Spitfire is a true aeronautical thoroughbred. Regarded by many as the saviour of the Sceptred Isle 'in its darkest hour', the Spitfire is without a doubt the most famous combat aircraft the world has ever seen. 1996 celebrates the 60th anniversary of the fighter's first flight, and this lavishly illustrated volume serves as a tribute to the airworthy survivors of today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photography of restored Spitfires., March 12, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Spitfire Flying Legend (General Aviation) (Hardcover)
This is one of my favorite Spitfire books. It has striking color photography of restored Spitfires in flight. Very current. Very nicely written, it traces the background of surviving aircraft, present ownership etc. It is quite comprehensive. There are a very few flyable Spitfires in the world that are not covered here. This review is from: Spitfire Flying Legend (General Aviation) (Hardcover)
A must have for all WW II aviation buffs, especially Spit lovers. The photos are awesome and there is plenty technical data to distinguish the various marks, plus combat reports adds a nice touch. A requirement for anyone planning to model the Supermarine Spitfire.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Stars really, June 19, 2006

The reviewers before me are right about content but what really does make this book are the STUNNING full colour, high resolution, two page spreads of surviving Spitfires flying inches from the camera plane. You can see the rivets and it is beautiful!
