Book Description

“Superb criminal comedy” – Amazon.co.uk reviewer

When Australian artist Simone Darling, her boyfriend Kevin in tow, travels to Florida for a family reunion she doesn’t expect to find a man stashed in her mother’s fridge. A dead man who looks just like Kevin. And who is on someone’s hit list. Too late does she realize that Kevin has been set up as innocent bait . . .

Desperate to evade their pursuers, Simone and Kevin embark on a hilarious adventure to Key West, where they find refuge at her mother’s weekend retreat. But even there Kevin is not safe, and soon Simone needs to use her artistic skills to try to rescue him and outwit the bad guys before it is too late.

A fun, breezy read for fans of comic misadventure.

Art restorer, Simone Darling, doesn't like Florida and swore she'd never visit the Sunshine State, but she becomes tempted when her mother offers her a high paying art restoration job. With a empty bank account Simone can't resist. So with boyfriend, Kevin, in tow they arrive in Miami. However not everything is normal, especially when Simone finds a dead body in her mother's fridge - a dead body that has an uncanny resemblance to her boyfriend, Kevin. It seems Simone and Kevin have fallen into a trap, but who has set out to frame Kevin? It will take Simone and Kevin all they've got to try and solve this one and keep Kevin out of jail!

I'm a big fan of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Mysteries, and when I heard this series was written in the same vein as Stephanie Plum I absolutely couldn't resist giving it a go.

As an Australian by birth, I absolutely loved the concept of Simone and her family being from Sydney, Australia and relocating to Miami, Florida. After all who wouldn't love all the sunshine and fun that Florida has to offer? Well apart from the crime, drug smugglers and the murder Simone is about to discover.

Spitting Image was an absolute laugh a minute, with all the hijinx that Simone and Kevin manage to get into, as they try to solve the murder. From the first chapter to the last it was laughs, mystery and mayhem and I'm so glad that I discovered this indie title.

If you love a good dose of mayhem and comedy with your cozy mystery, I highly recommend this Florida-based cozy mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious ride November 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
In the novel Spitting Image, by M. K. Mattias, the main character can't stay out of trouble. Simone Darling is terrified of flying. After her father plunged to his death when he fell out of a helicopter, Simone never wants to step foot onto a plane. Also, she's afraid of America, especially Miami. Her fear of Miami is extreme. Simone, who lives in Sydney, Australia, never wants to visit her mom in Florida. Never.

Kevin, an accountant, wants to make the journey to the land of vice and crime, and he isn't scared of Miami. Turns out he of all people should be. Once Simone and Kevin arrive in her mother's apartment in Miami things start to go wrong. Very wrong. First, Kevin finds out that Simone is armed and dangerous. Then she wanders to her mother's fridge and discovers a dead man in the freezer. The dead man looks just like Kevin. Simone doesn't know what her mother's husband, Curtis, does for a living. He doesn't talk much. Simone can only remember having one conversation with him, which incidentally was about how Curtis always carries a gun with him. Now she finds a dead man in the freezer. Is Curtis a drug smuggler? Is her mom a gangster's moll? And is Kevin in danger?

This is the type of novel that makes you forget logic. If you think too hard about the plot, it will unravel. Don't do that. If you are able to immerse yourself into this crazy story, it's a hilarious ride. On several occasions I found myself laughing out loud. Simone attempts to do the right things all of the time, yet her intentions always go wrong. Poor Kevin turns out to be her victim each and every time. If she isn't accidentally using her stun gun on him, she's kicking him in the crotch, or almost shooting him. The trip to save their relationship is pushing them to the edge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Enjoyable Read November 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Really fast paced, really hilarious book with great characters in the setting of Miami. The narration and the character is built so well, that you really believe SIMONE DARLING WON'T GO TO PARADISE UNLESS YOU PAY THEM. FBI, drugs, traps, crime and humour. Awesome book, good read, can be read in one setting

5.0 out of 5 stars More! More! November 17, 2012

It was fun viewing Miami through the eyes of Australians. The writing did remind me of Stephanie Plum, a favorite series of mine. But Spitting Image was lighter and zanier. I did laugh out loud, and I'll read the book again because it was so enjoyable. It was a little unbelievable that Simone jumped so often into dangerous situations, or that her boyfriend was so weak-kneed, but the story was very enjoyable, and I am hoping for more from M.K. Mattias.

This is a really funny new mystery. I read it in one sitting! Simone Darling the main character is hilarious as she tries to stay out of trouble, but with little success. This is a fast-paced book with enough twists and turns to keep you on your toes. I am looking forward to the next one. Highly recommended.

SPITTING IMAGE is one of the funniest mysteries I've read in ages. I literally laughed my way through it from beginning to end. The book is very well written, and the author has a natural talent for comedy, unique characters, and amazing plot turns. I highly recommend Spitting Image for a fast and fun read and hope Ms. Mattias writes more stories in the Simone Darling series.

Just finished SPITTING IMAGE and really enjoyed it. Simone Darling is a great character and hope to see her in more books. She has a crazy Mother and an unusual stepfather. Only thing I did not like was Kevin not enough of a man more of a wimp to me.
