Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

When Emily Dickinson wrote "There's a Certain Slant of Light, Winter Afternoons," the image was irresistible. The light-filled paintings of 109 artists in this work elicit emotional responses that one need not be a poet to respond to. Each artist in this compendium offers thoughts on subject and technique, and editor Wolf tries to put the ineffable-the mysticism and wonder of light-into words. Patricia Monahan's Light in Watercolour (Studio Vista, 1996) may be more practical in explaining light on water, trees, and the like, but Wolf's book is poetry and inspiration on paper.

Review

Over 120 watercolor paintings which celebrate light are gathered in this beautiful collection of contrasts and images. This gathers illustrations from over a hundred contemporary American watercolorists, who examine the nature of light in art and explore how their used it to their advantage. A highly recommended collection of stunning images. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars A Splash of Inspiration, April 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Splash 4: Best of Watercolor: The Splendor of Light (v. 4) (Hardcover)
This was the first Splash book I had seen and I've now purchased all of them. As a newby to watercolor I have to say this is the most inspiring book on watercolor I have ever seen. The book includes 109 different artist's and, true to the title, all pics display spectacular ways of dealing with light as the focal point of the painting. Whenever I'm stuck for an idea, a quick review of this book has me rushing for my paints.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the Light, July 8, 2008

This review is from: Splash 4: Best of Watercolor: The Splendor of Light (v. 4) (Hardcover)
Each Splash book in Rachel Rubin Wolf's series has a specific theme; Splash 4 is about light.

109 watercolorists are represented in the book with their work in color and a small excerpt about their method, ideas, and execution of the painting. It is very inspiring and helpful to look at the array of paintings.

The light and shadows in this book are the highlight.

5.0 out of 5 stars A dizzying array of art styles, October 6, 2006
This review is from: Splash 4: Best of Watercolor: The Splendor of Light (v. 4) (Hardcover)
Ms Rubin Wolf is a master at assembling a dizzying array of various art styles. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. Unfortunately for me, I already know what I like - representative art with an eye toward good color harmony. I purchased the book hoping it would elevate my portrayal of light and shade. This book did not meet this quest.
