4.0 out of 5 stars Wish it had encryption but still great for Kindle Fire December 13, 2011

This app works great with the Kindle Fire and will not require any complex steps to get up and running for most people.

My only complaint is the lack of optional end-to-end encryption at the time of this review. This is one reason why Splashtop is so much faster than the competition. On Splashtop's official support forum, they also admit this was done on purpose to maximize performance. This is fine, but I think there should be optional encryption for those who won't mind slower performance in favor of a more secure connection on public wi-fi.

You do indeed need to create a security code for your computer and the Android app so it's not like your computer and your Android device is left wide open to be taken over, but the session can still be snooped on. The good news is that I read a forum post by a staff member on September 1, 2011, that additional security features are being planned. I will edit this review when those security features are released.

Another piece of good news is that encryption isn't really needed when you use this app to connect to your own computers on your own home network as long as your wi-fi is secured properly (preferably using at least WPA2). When using Splashtop on public wi-fi networks at restaurants, cafes, library, airport, etc, you are at a risk since there is no encryption like with some other remote desktop apps for Android. Honestly, most people are not going to bother snooping on your remote desktop session or even know how to do it, but the risk is still there if you happen to be on the same public network as someone savvy and crooked enough to do it.

So for now, I will only use this app on my own home network.

I got this program in January of 2012. I checked it out and I did not and will not use it. The risk of losing data and the security of the program could cost you to lose control of your data and documents. No IT department of any company would allow the use of this program and why should you trust your personal data to it?

After you load the program it asks you to install the partnering streamer program onto every computer that you intend to use this app with. This allows access to all of the files and data on your computer that you wish to share. You are then asked to agree to an End User License Agreement that openly states that they can collect and use data. What data?

The original program has no encryption of the data that it is streaming so not only is their program in your computer seeing your data but the WIFI that you are using with your tablet can also collect, see and use your data. Yes, every keystroke you are making. If you are typing in your banking accounts and pass code I am sure that someone may send you a Christmas card! The program claims to have made security improvements. What are they and when did the make them? Of all of the details about the app shown data security is the most important and least disclosed information.

I rated this app at 1 star and I will not use it. It is too open and too dangerous for business or personal use. Anyone can set up a WIFI access point anywhere in a few minutes and gather your information as you log onto a fake Guest Network. No encryption means NO-GO for me.

Permissions:
* Find accounts on your device
* View network connections
* View WIFI connections
* Prevent tablet from sleeping

This app contains flurry analytics and tracks your app usage and where you are within the app. It can also monitor the software for failures.

The app installed 7.29MB into my device memory and it is not transferable to my SD card.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the greatest App or Program Ever December 11, 2011

I have been working with computers since 1977. For the person who wants to remotely see and function with your home computer, this is priceless. It does everything you can do remotely, even a CTR-ALT-DEL. It's like you are sitting in front of it. It even uses any shortcut keys you have set up at home. You can play all of the music, pictures, videos you have on your home computer remotely. I create Microsoft Office documents remotely and file or mail them anywhere. I am an old guy of 70, but when I visit your grandchildren it's great to show them anything I have on my computer at home, even movies of their 1st birthdays. And the biggest feature is it works as an App or on any other computer you have. So when I want to do something involved I can use my laptop from anywhere I can get a WiFi signal, my family room, bathroom, car, Mickey D's or anyone you visit who has WiFi. Easy to install, but Splashtop support is unreal; it's the best I have ever had. I know I sound like I own the company, wish I did, these people know how to run a business.

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge security holes! January 6, 2012

I can understand how they left encryption for their Pro version. I don't understand how they can leave the remote computer unlocked when you sign in to it. Even the Windows RDP client will keep the remote computer locked when you log in. With this program, the second you log in, someone walking by at the remote computer has full access. There should also be an easy way to turn keyboard prediction off from within the program, so you can easily and securely enter passwords. If you forget to turn prediction off in Android (which means exiting the program and going through some menus), your Android keyboard will end up remembering your passwords as you enter them. Splashtop should just let you treat text boxes on the remote computer as password vs regular text boxes with a simple toggle.

Malware? Coincidence?
As a reviewer pointed out, this software does NOT currently provide encryption on either end of the connection. What this means is that if you were using this on an open network, such as Starbucks, etc., and a devious person were "listening" on that network, they could pick up any... Read More
