Good for design inspiration, but..., March 7, 2000

This review is from: Splendid Silk Ribbon Embroidery: Embellishing Clothing, Linens & Accessories (Paperback)
This book is one of the best for providing suggestions on how to use silk ribbon embroidery to embellish your clothing (vests, tops, etc). It has a short section describing the stitches, and each design element is identified by the type of stitches used to make it. The book isn't really intended for a beginner, though. It doesn't give a description of HOW to make the flowers in a given design-- in fact, it doesn't walk you through making ANY flowers. As a result, if you already know how to make roses, lilacs, etc, and are seeking inspiration for applying these techniques to a variety of garments (vests, sweaters, girls' headbands, brooches, etc), then this is the perfect book for you. If you are a true beginner, don't expect that this book will teach you the basics.

Say What......?, February 15, 2012
This review is from: Splendid Silk Ribbon Embroidery: Embellishing Clothing, Linens & Accessories (Paperback)
For me, it was the same as before...I started out feeling cynical--by the time I reached the middle of the book I was sold! I started thumbing through the projects and decided to post-it-note-pad the patterns I liked; before I could get very far, I had so many pages marked, I knew I had to purchase a copy of this book for my personal library. "Splendid Silk Ribbon Embroidery" is a winner just like "The Filet Crochet Book." Too, this book follows the same formula, each project is from a different contributor, and this allows for a fresh, innovative spin on every project. Chris Rankin selects project for his/her books that are delightful, timeless, easy classics. For beginners, there is a stitch guide in the front. And...,each project has a fully detailed schematic for stitching the selected project. Another sure-fire winner for Chris Rankin!

I found this book to be not very helpful with the basics of how to for a beginner, but very helpful with the design of patterns. They do not work on dark fabrics, which is what I needed, so had to improvise. The patterns were repetative, but that was ok for me. I got the basics down. I would like to have seen more actual pictures of finished work.
