5.0 out of 5 stars Reprint Even Better Than The First!, April 2, 2000
This review is from: Splint Woven Basketry (Paperback)
When this book was first published, back in the 80s, it was one of the first basketry instruction books I ever purchased. I still have the ragged thing, well worn because of how often I used it.

Robin's clear pictures and very detailed, well written, instructions made learning how to weave baskets a sheer delight. Step by step, she leads the beginner on a sure path to the ultimate perfect basket. Intermediate basketweavers are also introduced to different weaving materials and techniques. This book offers something for everyone.

I am very fortunate that my deer antler basket pictures appear in this latest revised copy. They are located on the first page of the artist gallery collection in the center of the book. These photographs are an addition to the original book, with several other excellent basketmakers work appearing in the gallery.

I am honored to be included in a book that I have always held in the caliber of the Bible. Thank you Robin for the reprint, it will help thousands of beginner basketmakers in their search for excellence!

Robin's book was there for me when I started weaving (that was about 10,000 baskets ago) and is still the one I reach for when I need help. Straightforward writing and clear photography combine to make this one of the very best basketry books out there. I've used it as a text in teaching countless classes. It's a book that every basketmaker, beginner or experienced, should have on the shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splint Woven, September 27, 2008
This review is from: Splint Woven Basketry (Paperback)
I have to echo previous reviewers of this book, it is in my opinion by far the best all around basketry book, especially for those of us who use natural materials in our work. Robin's details about harvesting and using nature's gifts have been more than informative, they've been invaluable over the years.
I've always considered this book to be my "basketry bible"... most of what I learned about this art came from Robin's book. Like "wickerwoman" I was honored to have a work of mine included in the updated edition of Splint Woven Basketry... I am sure that this book will continue to inspire artists for a very long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Baskets, April 24, 2011

I think that the information offered in this book, as well as the basket patterns, are informative and interesting. The ribbed basket patterns are beautiful, and under the Plaited Baskets section, the Cherokee Gathering Basket is particularly outstanding. The Finishing Touches section is well-illustrated and one I refer to often.

Two things keep me from giving this book five stars: (1) the directions could use improvement in the writing: some steps must be inferred, and some sentences are ambiguous at best.

(2) The publisher, Sterling, should have provided a better binding. With even minor use, the pages in the book separate from the spine, so that the user has loose pages floating around the book and falling out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reacquaintance, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Splint Woven Basketry (Paperback)
In 1985 whilst in Colorado on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange I took a class with Robin Daugherty. I knew nothing about basket making but was fascinated by all the wonderful baskets in her home. I absolutely adored my weekly session and at the end of my year I took every basket back home to England where they can still be found in every corner of my house!. They were my babies. Along with the baskets came her newly published book. I was very keen to continue my new passion and so I ordered a large bundle of supplies..... but work took over and it is only last month (over 20 years on) that I took out her book, collected the supplies from the garage and have finished the Cherokee Gathering Basket which I started all those years ago!!! Of course I can only do this because of the book 'Splint Woven Basketry). Coming back to it after all these years I am amazed at how precise the instructions are and how interestingly each basket is described. Quite excellent photos too. I want to make each one all over again. The book holds so many memories for me and as other reviewers have said has become a real 'friend'.
I have a problem finding the materials in England (it tends to be willow over here) so if anyone knows of a UK based web-site please let me know so that I can continue with this reawakened passion.

Concise, written fluently and organized; highly recommend.

Not written simply as a hazard of relation.
