4.0 out of 5 stars Sam only gets better, March 16, 2007

This review is from: Splinter Cell Double Agent (Video Game)
I have very few complaints in the Splinter Cell series, if any. Sam himself is a very complex, mysterious, solitary character and a lot of his life experiences have yet to be explored, but we do learn a lot about him and his family--especially in Splinter Cell: Double Agent. (But I won't spoil it) I know many X-box owners say PS2 games don't hold a candle to their system, as a non-X-box user, they're probably right, but I know you certainly can't discount PS2 in its quality. Many a PS2 games have been brilliant in environment, scale, sound, visuals and game play and this is no exception.

The game looks wonderful, I think it looks just as good as Chaos Theory if just a little better. Prison is where you first notice the extreme pristine of the game visuals--water sprinklers look and sound like real water, they drop on the puddles on the floor, smoke and flames actually hinder your viewing, things crinkle and break, sound is excellent.

I know that the trailers played up the Prison aspect as if he was there more than half the game, but that isn't true. A major part of the game, it's only several levels (amazing though they are) but do not get excited about Sam being in OZ for the whole game. *g*

I do miss old characters (Wilkes, Grim) but love to see regulars back.

The game does not stray from its original format, if you've played one SC you've played them all. I know that this game isn't for all gamers, I wouldn't recommend this to someone with little patience, no interest in espionage or stealth, or slow story build up. You can play it as run-and-gun, but I think sneaking is what the game is meant to be and really works best to get the most out of it. The game is really built so you can sneak and not shoot everyone in site.

That said, the AI here is a lot better--in some spots. I noticed that if I was spotted by a guard or some type of security (especially in prison) he did not seem to let up, he used a flashlight (way cool) to seek out my spot and actually came all the up to where I was hiding before I snuck off. They really did try and find you. This is played on Normal mind you. Overall though, SC enemies are not that forthcoming. Usually once they have spotted you they will be on "guard" and just walk back and forth or stand in place making it harder for you to sneak past, annoying and stupid.

Normally they have a 'walk' or 'guard' pattern that you can easily memorize and ease around, most enemies can be easily evaded or killed. However, realistically they will respond to sound and movement, get scared, search shadows if you get too noisy and team up (much like the brilliance in "Chaos Theory" (can you tell I loved CT yet? ;)

I don't think the game is bad, has mini games to keep you a little more interested. The game is pretty linear and can somewhat be easily followed. If you've been a SC fan thus far, you will continue to benefit from this next installment. I do not believe it has gotten worse.

On the note of saving, while saving any time is a complete bonus, I don't like having to 'rewrite' over my last saved game as I also had to in CT. Why can't I have save cells so if I did want to start over somewhere I can, instead of completly saving over all my progress with my new progress? I don't like that and took away a star.

Overall, SCDA tried (and did succeed) to breath new life in the series with new environments and a new disconnected and reckless Sam. If anything new (or continued) I'd like to see are:

--> Even more realistic AI among enemies
--> More relationship between Sam and Lambert
--> Grimsdottir's return
--> More new environments

Well done Ubisoft.

This Game is freaking sweet! Every move you make dictates how well you are trusted in either the NSA or the terrorist group: JBA you infiltrated. You have to be even more caculating then in all the other games. This game in some levels you are playing with a teammate (not coop but in single player). The Graphics are what you would expect from Splinter Cell: The Best the PS2 can offer. I would strongly recommend this game to you if you like the splinter cell series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game but too short and over hyped., October 31, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Splinter Cell Double Agent (Video Game)
Let me start by saying this: SCDA is a great game. Its got all the pulse pounding stealth action you'd expect from a Splinter Cell game and the graphics are spectacular. But the game was way to short. The other three SC's It took me about a week each to beat (pretty short there anyway) but I beat DA in four days, three really (I only played for a half hour or so one of the days.) Another thing is the story line felt extreamly choppy. This is likely due to the fact that at many times in the game you make an important descision for Sam that effects the cinema that comes after the level. Also, gone are CNN style cinemas that have become a staple of the Splinter Cell series. Instead the story is told through a phone conversation between Sam and NSA Assistant Director Williams which was not as well done as it could have been. One final flaw is Sam's relationship with Enrica. That relationship plays in heavily at the end of the game but they spend little time developing it. I know I spent most of the time talking about the negitive aspects of the game, but make no mistake. Splinter Cell Double Agent is well worth buying since it is highly replayable since you can go through and make different descisions that will effect the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 ways to fun, January 10, 2007

This review is from: Splinter Cell Double Agent (Video Game)
At first when I started playing this game, I did not know that there were three ways to finish the game. As soon as I completed the first finish, I was upset and played it again but had a different ending. I was happy at this point. The game developers really threw a twist onto a great game. Overall physics of the game are awesome. Lighting, voice, graphics and everything is just fabulous. I recommend this for anyone who likes the stealthy third person shooter games and first person shooters.

Gamer "Gamer" (Atlanta, GA United States) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Splinter Cell Double Agent (Video Game)
'Splinter Cell: Double Agent' is another solid game in what is undoubtedly one of the best series to hit the Xbox or PS2. Like the first three games, 'Double Agent' reunites us with familiar faces from the original games and drops you into an engrossing storyline immediately. This time around however, Fisher is undercover and actions you take throughout the game will drastically effect the overall outcome. This is a nice twist on the series and adds elements to the game not seen previously. Graphics are a bit cleaner in this one; visibility is improved and the game looks great overall. One thing I did notice is that the developers spent essentially no time on the additional characters and you will kill the exact same guy repeatedly. You are given a few new gadgets to assist you along the way. The game allows you to save (yay!) just about anywhere, so you don't have to play entire areas over and over from a checkpoint. I will point out though that both the save and load times are considerably long.

Voice talent, as always is top notch and the controls are easy to learn. Another huge improvement is the method used for the keypad hacking. Gone are the irritating number sequences and in place are frequency matches, which are much easier to master overall. There are a few additions that don't really have any impact on the game at all; such as interacting with other characters to access areas of the game. This has virtually no real point in the game but at least it is so obvious that you don't really waste much time on it. The missions are clear and you won't spend a lot of time wandering around trying to find areas or items. The AI of the game can be a bit glitchy. At times, you are spotted when you are completely concealed and others you are literally standing right in front of an enemy in full view and he doesn't even notice you. The alarm system is still in place but not nearly as sensitive as seen previously and way more forgiving. You don't seem to run out of ammo as often either. The game is considerably shorter than others in the series and the story line is a bit contrived but overall, a good action packed game that does the series justice. If you are a fan of the series, you won't want to miss this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars needs more co-op missions, January 15, 2007

The only problem I have with these type of games is shelling out $40-$50 for a few hours of fun. What I mean is, there are not enough missions in the co-op version to make it worth the price of admission. There are only 4 missions which take about 1-2 hours each, and after you've finished them the game is pretty much over--it's not like you can play them again and pretend you don't know what you've already learned. Aside from that, I found the four missions to be alot of fun and very challenging at times...I played them with my 16-yr old son and a few times we had to consult a walk-through to advance further. I wish there was a game out there that was different each time you played it--or that the game manufacturers made a few more games that featured co-op versions...there are really only a few choices on the market now, and it seems we've played them all. As for Splinter Cell:Double Agent, I would definitely recommend it--just be aware that the co-op version isn't very long.

You may think this game is the same as the ps3 versions, but its not. The story is different, what sam does is different, the gameplay is different, and it better than the ps3 version. this is the generation 6 version. Gamecube, Wii and Ps2 is genereation 6. generation 7 is ps3 and 360.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best so far..., March 9, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Splinter Cell Double Agent (Video Game)
This is a really good game. It is by far the most involved, funnest overall, and coolest game out of the Splinter Cell series (thus far). I have it for the PS2, so the graphics aren't the best in the world; but the gameplay makes up for it! It features new gadgets, weapons, and a few moves, too. The missions are all pretty exciting, so it's not like you play it once and never open it again. In fact, it's a blast to play over and over. I also like how you are forced to make decisions and not blow your cover with either side. There are even bonus maps, and the game also incorporates some co-op as well. Don't let graphics fool you; it's the gameplay that counts. If you are interested in this game, buy it. It's challenging and fun at the same time.
