Superb musicianship throughout, March 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Split Coconut (Audio CD)
This is my all-time favorite Dave Mason work. Bought it when it first came out on vinyl and the CD still gets regular play. Dave is truly at his best on this album, but pay attention to the work of the other musicians as well. Drums, bass, keyboards, back-up vocals... all are excellent. The funky title track is just sheer musical fun. Dave Mason has always been under-rated by the record-buying public, but not by fellow musicians. The credits of people who cut tracks on his solo albums reads like a who's who of classic rock. This work is no exception. If you're a musician who appreciates good stuff when you hear it, no matter what the genre or generation, check this one out.

A melodic treat full of great guitar and harmonies, December 31, 1998
This review is from: Split Coconut (Audio CD)
I originally bought this album on vinyl from Virgin Records in Birmingham back in the seventies when it was first released. I'd seen Dave Mason on the Old Grey Whistle Test (cult British TV music show) and decided to check out his music. I was very pleasantly surprised by the catchy melodies incorporated in the songs on this album. Dave's vocals have a certain poignancy and sincerity, and when the vocal harmonies of both Crosby and Nash and the Manhattan Transfer join in, then you're guaranteed an aural treat. Add to this the fluid guitar playing that is Mason's trademark, and you have a damn fine record. The two standout tracks for me are "Give me a reason why", which you won't stop humming, and "Long lost friend", which builds to a stirring guitar-filled finish. A spledid version of Buddy Holly's "Crying, Waiting and Hoping" is also worthy of note. If you want a classy, easy on the ear album full of catchy melodies, buy this !

Good Playing, Weak Lyrics, February 1, 2008
This review is from: Split Coconut (Audio CD)
I bought this cd because it was only six bucks and it was one I had not seen in the Dave Mason files. I am one of those guys who thinks that Alone Together, his first album, is his best. I didn't have much hope for Split Coconut but it suprised me. It is a very good album when you don't want to think too hard to enjoy music. Let's face it, Mr. Mason is not the best of lyric writers, but he is one damn good guitar player. Good tone, nice little fills-- you can't stay mad at him for the so-so lyrics, and dig that tight, cooking band backing him up. Check it out, it's worth looking into.

A hearty agreement with the other reviewers, October 4, 2007
This review is from: Split Coconut (Audio CD)
I have been a Dave Mason fan since I saw him on PBS "Soundstage" back in '75 or '76. I bought "Split Coconut" shortly after it was released, have loved it ever since, and was tickled to death when I finally found it on CD. It's one of my favorites out of over 750 CDs in my collection. While the entire album is wonderful, my favorite cuts are the title song, "Two Guitar Lovers", and "Long Lost Friend". I strongly feel that the period between 1968 and 1979 produced the best in rock music and "Split Coconut" is an excellent example of rock at it's best.

I love every track on this album. Most people have never heard of Dave Mason. I first came across him on Old Grey Whistle test and loved his music straight away.

A great recording, June 17, 2000
This review is from: Split Coconut (Audio CD)
I had it on tape and I literally wore the tape out listening to it. This is the happiest, most listenable album of its era. If you love traffic, you love Dave Mason. If you love reggae, you'll love this recording.
