Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
While many of their contemporaries have branched out in intriguing new directions since their dream-pop debuts, the members of Lush remained committed to a hazy wall of Cocteau Twins guitar, breathy harmonies by Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson, and a fairly straightforward dance beat. The English quartet's third album, Split, isn't an improvement or a departure from Gala (1990) or Spooky (1992). Lush continues exploring pleasant but slight sounds on songs such as "Hypocrite" and "Light from a Dead Star," and it's likely that the group will always be remembered as the opening act on Lollapalooza '92. --Jim DeRogatis

5.0 out of 5 stars Substantial, multi-faceted, well-written and deep, November 23, 1998
By A Customer
Lush were a terrific band, no doubt about that. Though each of their incarnations were slightly different (ragtag guitar noise and murky lyrics on their early tracks, dreamy-dull "etherial" stylings on their first LP "Spooky," frisky Brit-pop on their last album "Lovelife," which mostly-English critics liked a lot more than I did), the group truly shines on "Split."

An excellent collection of mature pop/rock songs, some bitter, some sad, some moody and atmospheric, all put together beautifully. There is no feeling of randomness with this album; each track flows to the next. Miki Berenyi's voice is in fine form, at whatever octave she chooses to sing at, and Emma Anderson's guitar work sparkles. "Split" is Lush's masterpiece, a work of art, intensely enjoyable. The perfect album to listen to while lying in bed with the lights off and the headphones on.

5.0 out of 5 stars When I die, March 5, 2003
By daisy e miller (Pacific Grove, CA USA) - See all my reviews
If someone played the closing track of this record at my funeral, I'd be very happy indeed as I floated away, no longer "sitting here in ourselves." This is my favorite Lush record BY FAR. The lyrics, instrumental texturing, and especially the vocal harmonies are like a fabulous drug that washes over you and leaves you spent yet satisfied. I put this record away for a few years then picked it up again the other day and was as moved as I was back in the nineties. I especially love the second song, "Kiss Chase."

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent full featured canvas of early 1990s music, October 2, 1998
Split opens with one of the most haunting and at the same time beautiful tracks written this decade ("Light from a Dead Star") and builds upon the basis of this to offer a coulourful and diverse set of songs. The vocal qualities of the band are both warm and chilling at once, soft and hard hitting. Their ability to write both short pop nuggets ("Hypocrite") and almost prog-rock like longer pieces ("Desire Lines") emphasise the fact that this album was the peak of their career, even if they subsequently became more commercially successful.

The layers of instrumentation on many of the tracks cause the listener to replay over and over again in order to untangle the wonderful complexity. A good pair of speakers is recommended however, as some of the bass is wonderfully melodic, and the guitars have fuzz turned up to 11 on a few of the tracks.

This album will make you both happy and sad, and is great for those moments when you want to express feelings when no one is around.

More than highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars There really is nobody quite like Lush, and Split is their best.
