Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Mix-tape battlecat Cassidy's first full-length album (the inaugural release on producer Swizz Beatz's Full Surface imprint) is a solid effort from a young Philly kid who built his rep on freestyle fanaticism, putting to rest doubts of his ability to cut it as a studio MC. Although it does come off as a singles-oriented album, most everything found on Split Personality is worth a listen or two. The fact that Swizz Beats handles the bulk of production duties may initially scare away some potential buyers, but his played out "bells and whistles" sound has been successfully revamped with heavier bottom-bass and some nice vintage samples. And Cassidy responds well to the sonic landscape he's been provided with, skillfully expounding upon a surprisingly diverse range of topics. Even the inevitable fumbles have their charm; Cassidy's aggressive flow and tart interpretation of threadbare subject matter rescue weak tracks like the Nelly-esque "I'm Hungry" from instant "fast forward" status. --Rebecca Levine

2.0 out of 5 stars 2-1/2 stars -- Nothing to get worked up about, July 10, 2004
I know I just mentioned this in my J-Kwon review, but apparently people don't seem to get it...is it really that hard to write a REAL review? It seems that if an MC is around 17 or 18, reviewers will just post the same one-sentence review for that person over and over (whether positive or negative), and in addition diss other reviewers that don't agree with them. That really screws things up for people who want to read thorough testimonies. This is a review section, not a message board.

Anyway, Cassidy seemed to take over the airwaves thanks to the success of his hit "Hotel" (featuring R. Kelly). I personally think that is one of the most overrated (not to mention lazy) songs I've heard all year. But I listened to his album anyway. When the first track, "My Interpretation", came on, I said, "Hey, maybe I was wrong about this guy." But I soon changed my mind after listening to the rest of the album.

Things don't work right when Cass tries to go politically conscious, which is obvious by one listen to "I'm Hungry". And he also fails when he gives it up for the ladies, like on "Around Tha World" and "Get No Better". Actually, the latter is decent until you get to the third verse, where he's saying things like: "Mm-mm-mm, with your sexy self/Go to my hotel and undress yourself/And after we have sex don't stress yourself/I'll still respect you if you respect yourself." And after that song the album, well, gets no better.

"Can I Talk to You" (featuring Jadakiss) suffers from a very disorganized chorus, and the chorus to "Tha Problem" isn't anything to celebrate either. And it doesn't help that that song is preceded by a lame buying-a-bad-Philly-Cheese-Steak-from-an-Arab skit. "Blood Pressure" contains a lot of bad similes ("I'm focused like disposable cameras"???), and "Pop That Cannon" and "Make U Scream" (with Snoop Dogg) are just plain wack.

Another problem lies in the fact that Cassidy appears to be a new prot?g? of Swizz Beatz, which in turn puts his production all over the album. But apparently Swizz still thinks it's 1998, as many of the songs' beats are flavored that way (see the aforementioned "Tha Problem"). Speaking of that song, Cassidy calling himself "tha problem" during the chorus took the words right out of my mouth.

Split Personality will probably be a hit with the young'uns, but the rest of us will have to look to something else.

(...)

P.S. The track listing for this album on Amazon is all wrong. Many of the songs listed can't even be found on the album.

2.0 out of 5 stars What a waist of 10 bucks, March 18, 2004
By "wonderboy20" (Virginia Beach, VA) - See all my reviews
When I heard that Cassidy was dropping an album this month and that Swizz Beatz was procucing it I was excited. I like the new stuff Swizz did on last years Styles P & DMX albums and I thought his G.H.E.T.T.O. Stories was hot too. His style is a little different but i thought he was doin his thing. After listening to his tracks of Split Personality I have to wonder. All of the Swizz produced songs were too pop. If I want pop rap, I'll go buy Nelly or Ja Rule but I expected more from Swizz Beatz and his boy Cassidy.

As far as the actual disc goes expect the pop sounding Swizz Beatz productions on the first 5 songs. Then a more grimey sound on the next couple with some great cameos by Styles P and Jadakiss. I don't even remember anything about the last couple of songs because they were just that bland.

Final Call. If you are a pop rap fan this album is for you. If you're a Swizz Beatz fan, don't expect the classic ruff ryders sound. Anyone looking for the first standout album of the year, look somewhere else. Hopefully the kid Jin will drop something hot for the Ruff Ryder fans.
