Lush were a terrific band, no doubt about that. 2.0 out of 5 stars Might be good for some
I bought this album on the strength of the single, Hypocrite.

Hypocrite is fantastic. Driving beat, big guitars, fantastic lyrics sung with utter conviction.

The rest of the album is, to me, woeful. Dreary, lacking energy, similar sounding and boring. It's surprising that a song as good as hypocrite shares an album with the rest of it.

I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Substantial, multi-faceted, well-written and deep, November 23, 1998

Lush were a terrific band, no doubt about that. Though each of their incarnations were slightly different (ragtag guitar noise and murky lyrics on their early tracks, dreamy-dull "etherial" stylings on their first LP "Spooky," frisky Brit-pop on their last album "Lovelife," which mostly-English critics liked a lot more than I did), the group truly shines on "Split."

An excellent collection of mature pop/rock songs, some bitter, some sad, some moody and atmospheric, all put together beautifully. There is no feeling of randomness with this album; each track flows to the next. Miki Berenyi's voice is in fine form, at whatever octave she chooses to sing at, and Emma Anderson's guitar work sparkles. "Split" is Lush's masterpiece, a work of art, intensely enjoyable. The perfect album to listen to while lying in bed with the lights off and the headphones on.

5.0 out of 5 stars When I die, March 5, 2003

If someone played the closing track of this record at my funeral, I'd be very happy indeed as I floated away, no longer "sitting here in ourselves." This is my favorite Lush record BY FAR. The lyrics, instrumental texturing, and especially the vocal harmonies are like a fabulous drug that washes over you and leaves you spent yet satisfied. I put this record away for a few years then picked it up again the other day and was as moved as I was back in the nineties. I especially love the second song, "Kiss Chase."

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent full featured canvas of early 1990s music, October 2, 1998
This review is from: Split (Audio CD)
Split opens with one of the most haunting and at the same time beautiful tracks written this decade ("Light from a Dead Star") and builds upon the basis of this to offer a coulourful and diverse set of songs. The vocal qualities of the band are both warm and chilling at once, soft and hard hitting. Their ability to write both short pop nuggets ("Hypocrite") and almost prog-rock like longer pieces ("Desire Lines") emphasise the fact that this album was the peak of their career, even if they subsequently became more commercially successful.

The layers of instrumentation on many of the tracks cause the listener to replay over and over again in order to untangle the wonderful complexity. A good pair of speakers is recommended however, as some of the bass is wonderfully melodic, and the guitars have fuzz turned up to 11 on a few of the tracks.

This album will make you both happy and sad, and is great for those moments when you want to express feelings when no one is around.

More than highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignored masterpiece, August 13, 1998

This is one of my all-time favorite albums. I am not a particular fan of this genre of music, but Lush delivers intense melodies in this CD that can get you rising off the floor. I can listen to this one over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Work Not Likely to be Exceeded, January 24, 2001

I own 3 Lush CDs and the other 2 - "Lovelife" and "Spooky" - do very little for me. But I consider Split one of the best alternative rock LPs ever made, and maybe the best out of Britain. Tracks two thru five - Kiss Chase, Blackout, Hypocrite and Lovelife - are a sonic tour-de-force that any act could be proud of. It's still a shame this band broke up after the trafic death of drummer Chris Acland because this CD suggests they could have accomplished much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums of the 90s, December 22, 1998
This review is from: Split (Audio CD)
This is Lush's greatest album, combining powerful, moving lyrics with reachable music. Some earlier work may have turned off people new to the genre or the group, but this album has something everyone can love - and Lush did not have to compromise their "sound" to make it happen. You will listen to this album over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO THIS CD!!!, June 26, 1998

A totally underrated cd from one of the best bands to emerge from the "shoegazer", "dreampop" era of the late 1980's. Haunting, aggressive and beautiful, Split is a classic recording. I still listen to it today and am moved by it's brilliance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush Please get back together!, February 23, 2000

I missed the Lush era...I hope I`ve made up for it by playing this disc non-stop for the last two weeks(lost my remaining few friends in the process)! Lush were a band that were nothing short of Legendary. It is simply criminal that they never reached the heights they so well deserved.I just recieved this CD in the mail and I`m so glad I got it.Miki Berenyi gets my vote for greatest female lead singer ever(very sensual voice )and possibly most photogenic person in a rock band(could easily be a model). The music is a little more raw than"SPOOKY"and ,in my opinion,of an even higher quality. If you`ve not bought a disc by Lush"Split"is wonderful through and through, possibly their best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a 5 star album, October 19, 2004

Incredibly moody and beautiful. I honestly can't say enough good things about the record. Hard to believe it's over 10 years old now. This is truly a lost sound that you don't hear enough of today. It's also very accessible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush's best, February 1, 2000
By
Jim Price (Raleigh, North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Split (Audio CD)
This is the most varied, mature and profound of Lush's releases. The first half of the CD could all be singles and the second half takes the band in bold new places with omnipresent basslines and emphasis on Miki and Emma's trademark harmonies. The guitar is less fuzzy than in Gala or Spooky. If you only get one Lush CD, this is the one. All of them are at least good. This one is excellent.
