Spock VS Q! Logic VS Chaos! Who's on First? An Asteroid!,
By Mary Jensen (Cedar Falls, Iowa USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spock Vs Q Cd (Audio CD)
Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie reprise their roles of Spock and Q in this very well written and comical audio performance that has been presented to appreciative fans at Star Trek Conventions around the world. Did you like the Spock VS Bones spats in Classic Star Trek, then you will love Spock VS Q on Audio! What an outlandishly funny take off of the odd couple. Spock is at the logical end of the continuum and Q is at the emotional end. Who will win the battle of the minds? The survival of the puny humans on Earth lies in the balance as the asteroid nears Earth. It made me laugh so hard I couldn't see straight. You will love it! Verbal insults fly profusely. Will Spock out-maneuver the clever and devilish Q in a verbal joust? Spock is really good at games, remember 3D Chess. Will he be able to outwit the all powerful Q? Will Q get an autograph from Spock for his collection, or will he have to stand in a long line like the rest of us? Will Q learn the Vulcan mind meld technique from Spock? Will the asteroids destroy the puny humans on Earth? Well buy the tape or CD and find out. Buy it and play it over and over. I hear new stuff every time I play mine. Don't delay buy your own copy of "Spock VS Q" on audio tape or CD today!

The perfect gift for the Trek fan of any persuasion!,

This review is from: Star Trek: Spock VS. Q : An Alien Voices Production (Audio Cassette)
This audiobook is from the Alien Voices series, but unlike their other titles, it is an original script, featuring two of Trek's most popular characters. If you miss either or both characters on the screen, this is the closest to hearing something new from them. It is recorded live, and in a way I wished it had been a videotape, so I could have seen the expressions on the actors' faces while they performed the text. Judging by the audience reaction, they must have been priceless. It is a very funny script, full of jokes, and a lot of verve. Spock was perhaps a bit more jocular than I remembered him, but Q was spot on. There were many great lines that, despite what I said earlier, really made me forget it was just an audiobook, because I could visualize the character in my mind very clearly. 'You've been manipulating me!' Q clamors at one point, and just the tone of De Lancie's chamaleonic voice brings the character to life right in front of your eyes. I'll be listening to this audiobook again and again!

Logic versus omnipotence... and the winner is...,
By Zagnorch (Terra, Sol System) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spock Vs Q Cd (Audio CD)
Ever since my initiation into the realm of Trekkie-dom, I've found Spock and Q to be among the most fascinating (doh!) characters to emerge from the Star Trek mythos. Even before this recording ever came out, I'd ofttimes wondered how these two individuals would match up in a battle of wits. But once I heard that two certain 'Trek actors started up an audio drama production company a few years back, I figured it was only logical (doh!) for them to eventually produce a little audio venture involving their Star Trek alter-egos. And sure enough...Alien Voices Productions co-creators Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie once again jump into the roles that have made them pop-culture legends, and have a go at the logic-versus-emotionalism debate in classic radio drama style, with the fate of humanity at stake. Spock has traveled back in time to warn his listeners (this production was recorded in front of a studio audience) about an impending asteroid collision, but Q makes efforts to prevent this intervention, going so far as using the Prime Directive of non-interference that Spock's Federation so reveres. Then there's the main event-Spock attempting to convince a seemingly indifferent Q to take action to prevent the catastrophe. Although the two take many verbal pot shots at each other over the course of the hour-- with Spock using his dry Vulcan logic and Q with his smug sarcasm-- the many retorts and barbs exchanged are more lighthearted than mean-spirited. Despite their positions on the issues, both opponents seem to have a certain degree of respect and even affection for each other. And despite the desperate nature of the situation, the tone of this little standoff is more "all in good fun" than it is grim. Although I felt that DeLancie's portrayal of Q was pretty much dead-on (though at times a bit too dramatic), I found some fault with Nimoy's Spock reprisal. He seemed a bit too emotional at times, and his moments of sarcasm were quite a bit more biting and a lot less reserved, especially when compared to his classic verbal bouts with Dr. McCoy. But despite Spock being somewhat out of character, I rather enjoyed this legendary war of wills. I found its many moments of lighthearted comedy and pitched battles of ideas to make for a very relaxing and thought-provoking hour. `Late

This really isn't an audio book, if by that you think of someone reading (and to some degree) performing a book. This is more like a tape of an old radio show, with the two actors giving us many laughs and fun moments. Both I felt stayed very in character for the most part, and it was clear the audience was greatly enjoying the performance. It was considerably shorter than most audio books, only an hour in length. However, that's really the only thing that detracts from it, and made me drop it down to 4 stars. You just go away wanting it to go on much longer than it did. Otherwise, I can't imagine any Trek fan not loving this delightful CD/tape.

Not what I expected,

I bought this cd for my husband, a great Star Trek fan. I also am a Star Trek fan and was looking forward to hearing it myself. I would have to admit, however that I was greatly disappointed. First, the cd was only about an hour in length and most of the time was used up by the audience clapping, laughing, etc. The humor was silly. I expected more from a debate between Spock and Q. It didn't seem worthy of the characters, especially Spock.

Q is at his most mischevious, and Spock still manages to run rings around the intergalactic trickster. Not since Spock and McCoy went back and forth in the original series has a verbal joust been this entertaining! Part of it even reminds me of the classic Abbott and Costello "Who's on First" routine, with Spock, of course, playing Abbott to Q's confused Costello. The best part of this production is that you can really tell that Nimoy and de Lancie are both having great fun performing it for us. If you like Spock, Q, or both characters, put this at or near the top of your "to purchase" list.

Spock vs Q, a wonderful meeting of two of the most important characters in the Trek universe. Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie are brilliant as usual in their characters. Who would've thought, a battle of wits between these two. The only way this would've been better is if it had been live on dvd or vhs. Spock vs Q is a great diversion for an hour or so on the highway. Thank you to all involved for this gem that can be listened to over and over.

This may not be what you expect. It isn't a radio drama like "The Shadow" or "The Green Hornet," but it is more like listening to Jack Benny or "A Prairie Home Companion." It is a casual and laid-back-and frequently funny-dialogue between Spock and Q.However, at times, it transcends the TV characters and becomes a verbal spar between Nemoy and De Lancie. Nemoy as Spock is calm, collected and gentle, with that grave and steady voice that is fun to listen to. Despite being unemotional, Nemoy-Spock has that dry and nuanced with that reminds of Socrates. De Lancie plays Q as that fun, bouncy, and spoiled-brat that reminds us of a cocky teenager with a drivers license and a full tank of gas. I'm not sure if the plot is weak, or if it just low-key. But it does sway before these two talented actors playing their memorable characters. I wonder if there is the germ of a TV special here? Was anyone keeping a video tape of the discussion?

Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie 'compliment' each other perfectly in their roles as Spock and Q! Or perhaps I should say they joust, insult, mock and generally try to outwit each other! The CD was recorded live so you will hear a bit of audience noise. FYI - I prefer this CD to their version of "The First Men on the Moon"!

This is one of the funniest shows I have heard or seen. Spock and Q debate weather or not humans have a right to live. Funniest tape in the Alpha Quadrant. Nimoy and DeLancie put on a good show so I give it a *burns a five into Q's forehead* FIVE!
