Spode's Woodland American Wildlife series brings nature to the table on high-quality earthenware. Each piece depicts in full color an indigenous North American animal, specifically a mother and her young, in a natural setting. The border is comprised of Spode's famous 19th-century British Flowers pattern in brown on a white background. Woodland originally showed a variety of game birds on its pieces; this is one of many versions showing other wildlife studies. Though autumnal in tone, the dinnerware makes a suitable year-round pattern, and the plates are even decoratively hung on walls.
Showing a black bear and her cub on the inside and the floral border both inside and out, this deep, rimless salad bowl, measuring 9-1/2 inches across, beautifully holds a tossed green salad or serves a side dish of potatoes. The two 12-inch wooden servers, finished in a handsome cherry stain, feature contemporary rounded heads. The set matches Woodland American Wildlife dinnerware, and makes a great gift for animal lovers. Spode, long one of England's most renowned potteries, makes the Imperialware bowl safe for heating food in the microwave and cleaning up with ease in the dishwasher, though the wooden servers should be washed lightly by hand. --Ann Bieri
