Book Description

May 2000
The blue willow pattern is probably the best-known of all designs on pottery and porcelain. It has given rise to a number of odd ideas about its origins. The author of this book has drawn on previously unpublished sources, particularly from the archives of the Spode Company, to give a detailed account of the introduction of the pattern by Josiah Spode. The willow pattern was, however, only one of the many chinoiserie designs produced in Staffordshire and elsewhere at the turn of the century. This book analyzes and discusses willow pattern and its immediate precursors, such as Mandarin and Rock. Many examples of these and other designs are illustrated here for the first time. This guide should be a useful reference for specialist collectors, museums, dealers and potters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must for Willow Collectors, April 21, 2009
This review is from: Spode's Willow Pattern: And Other Designs After the Chinese (Hardcover)
When you attend a show, visit a flea market, or browse an antique store you will see customers reach for examples of willow patterned china. You will hear the comment, "Oh, my grandmother had this pattern."
For many this begins the life long joy of collecting willow pattern china. Mr. Robert Copeland, a former president and now member of the board for the Spode Company has made two visits to the yearly meeting of the International Willow Collectors Society. His visits have always been fountains of information about this beloved pattern and other patterns of oriental design.
SPODE'S WILLOW PATTERN is a must have volume for any collector whose love or interests tend to the oriental. Authors also use the information, so far a mention of willow has occurred in each of our mysteries.
Nash Black, author whose books are also available in Kindle editions.
