Praise for Spoken For

Spoken For is the kind of book every Christian teenage girl wants to read: a perfect mixture of truth and love story and Jesus and humor. Robin and Alyssa have practically written the handbook for every young woman looking to understand how God feels about them.”
—Annie Downs, author of Speak Love and Perfectly Unique

Spoken For is filled with life-changing truths that will help you discover, strengthen, or reclaim your true identity. This book will teach you how to embrace the person God has created you to be while dispelling the lies that keep you captive. A must-read for every young woman who longs to know her true value, beauty, and purpose.”
—Allie Marie Smith, founder of Wonderfully Made and author of Becoming Who You Are in Christ

“I highly recommend this relevant and essential book to any young woman trying to understand romantic relationships, navigating her way through the dating world, or even considering marriage. Robin and Alyssa are candid, thoughtful, and wise as they share personal stories and universal truths. This would be a great tool for mothers and daughters, book clubs, and youth groups. I’ll be recommending it to my young-adult readers.”
—Melody Carlson, award-winning author of the series Diary of a Teenage Girl and TrueColors

“Alyssa and Robin have written a book that is so tender and true, full of encouragement for all of us as we try to understand the love of the Savior. You will walk away from this book changed for the better and celebrating the fact that you are truly loved by the One who knows you best, the One who created you with a plan and a purpose.”
—Melanie Shankle, New York Times best-selling author of Sparkly Green Earrings

“What makes Spoken For unique is the authors’ ability to internalize and understand that we are in the midst of a divine love story! Alyssa and Robin casually and eloquently remind us not only of who we are but whose we are and that we are wanted, loved, and spoken for.”
—Bianca Olthoff, speaker, teacher, and chief storyteller for the anti–human trafficking organization The A21 Campaign

“In Spoken For, Robin’s and Alyssa’s gentle honesty and personal stories made me feel as if we were out having coffee together and talking about our love for the Lord. This book is a perfect reminder of how great his love is for us and how sweetly he cares for us.”
—Erynn Mangum, author of Paige Torn

“Anytime two unique voices come together with a unified message, there is power in it. Robin and Alyssa have different perspectives and life stages, but both have experienced God’s relentless love and now want to give it away. Spoken For will help you remember your infinite worth because of Jesus Christ and what potential abounds if you will only embrace it.”
—Jennie Allen, founder of the IF:Gathering and author of Restless

Robin Jones Gunn and Alyssa Joy Bethke have tapped into one of the great needs in the heart of most women---to be loved. They've written this book, Spoken For, all about the divine romance, the way God loves us, pursues us, and calls us His own.

The book is an extremely easy read. I read it in a quick afternoon. Each chapter generally starts with them taking turns telling part of their own love stories (dating, engagement, wedding day) and then relates that to how God loves us with a few Scripture verses. They conclude each chapter with about five questions for further discussion.

This is not a Bible study. The discussions stay fairly superficial and while it may work well for a book club, I wouldn't choose to use it for my next women's Bible study book. It would be a great fit however, for a high school or college small group for women or even for women who haven't been Christians long and need to discover their identity in Christ. The book is also a sweet encouragement of our position in Christ for any Christian woman who struggles with feeling unloved.

I'm not a particularly emotional, romance-loving, wedding-show-watching woman. I don't care for most 'chick flicks' and didn't start planning my wedding in high school. I didn't dream about 'the perfect proposal' and I don't read romance novels or watch the Hallmark channel. If you do, you'll love this book! But it kind of emphasized emotions and tendencies that just aren't me. That isn't at all meant to take away from this book's best audience or purpose. As a straightforward encouragement that God loves you, this book is lovely---simple and sweet and true.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review and the opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

When I first saw Spoken For, I was a little worried it might be too simplistic and not that deep of a read, just because it came across as though it’s geared towards a younger audience. But the more I learned about it, the more I realized it actually seemed to fit the stage of life I’m in right now almost perfectly. While it was a tad simplistic in parts, I would highly recommend this book for not only teens, but also for women in their 20′s and maybe even their 30′s, that’s how good it was! Spoken For has a message every woman can relate to, and that’s about our quest for love. Our need to be desired and cherished, to hold and be held, to love and be loved.

Who doesn’t adore a good romance? The thing is, we often miss the greatest romance of all: the one we have with our Savior.

How do I describe all that this book did for me at this stage in my life? Let’s just say it was a message I desperately needed to hear, and that it left me in tears. Authors Robin Jones Gunn and Alyssa Joy Bethke helped me understand God’s love in a way I never have before in such a raw, touching way, I can honestly say this is one book that has helped change my outlook on life and relationship with my Savior forever.

There aren’t many books that can do that!

I am adopted, and while I grew up with the two most amazing, loving people I know as parents, I’ve always struggled with some feelings of rejection. So when I read the chapter called, “You Are Wanted,” I cried. I’ve never been the girl to turn heads, have never had a boyfriend, and usually hid in a corner on prom nights. So when I read, “You Are Pursued,” I bawled. And what salve to my soul to hear “You Are Loved” after a season of isolation and pain that seemed to last forever.

Spoken For: Embracing Who You Are and Whose You Are is the newest book by Robin Jones Gunn, author of the wonderful Christy Miller series, as well as Sisterchicks and many more. She co-authored the book with the lovely Alyssa Joy Bethke. The story of how these two came to collaborate on the book is itself inspiring as we see how God orchestrated the timing and circumstances to get these important words on paper.

Robin and Alyssa both share from their hearts and experiences as they impart important truths about who we are in God's eyes and our worth to him. Both of these authors write not only to their audience, but to themselves, as they remind us that even in the broken times, even when it seems all is lost and we feel alone, that we are children of God. We the Bride of Christ. We are Spoken For. In each chapter, they take turns sharing their stories. Stories of pain, and stories of hope and love. They share the words that God spoke to us in his precious Word to break down the lies of the enemy that are often so easy to believe and replace them with the truths that God wants us to know about ourselves.

As the chapter headings show us, they remind us that each of us is wanted, pursued, loved, have been called, are of great value, are peculiar treasures, are set free, are covered, promised and spoken for. Whether we are single, married, found Mr Right or are still waiting, no matter what our circumstances, these words hold true for all of us.

If you need reminding of how precious you are, how loved you are, how much our Lord and Saviour is pursuing you has His very own, this is the book for you. And who doesn't need to be washed continually in these beautiful truths? This book is a great encouragement.
