Praise for Spoken For

Spoken For is the kind of book every Christian teenage girl wants to read: a perfect mixture of truth and love story and Jesus and humor. Robin and Alyssa have practically written the handbook for every young woman looking to understand how God feels about them.”
—Annie Downs, author of Speak Love and Perfectly Unique

Spoken For is filled with life-changing truths that will help you discover, strengthen, or reclaim your true identity. This book will teach you how to embrace the person God has created you to be while dispelling the lies that keep you captive. A must-read for every young woman who longs to know her true value, beauty, and purpose.”
—Allie Marie Smith, founder of Wonderfully Made and author of Becoming Who You Are in Christ

“I highly recommend this relevant and essential book to any young woman trying to understand romantic relationships, navigating her way through the dating world, or even considering marriage. Robin and Alyssa are candid, thoughtful, and wise as they share personal stories and universal truths. This would be a great tool for mothers and daughters, book clubs, and youth groups. I’ll be recommending it to my young-adult readers.”
—Melody Carlson, award-winning author of the series Diary of a Teenage Girl and TrueColors

“Alyssa and Robin have written a book that is so tender and true, full of encouragement for all of us as we try to understand the love of the Savior. You will walk away from this book changed for the better and celebrating the fact that you are truly loved by the One who knows you best, the One who created you with a plan and a purpose.”
—Melanie Shankle, New York Times best-selling author of Sparkly Green Earrings

“What makes Spoken For unique is the authors’ ability to internalize and understand that we are in the midst of a divine love story! Alyssa and Robin casually and eloquently remind us not only of who we are but whose we are and that we are wanted, loved, and spoken for.”
—Bianca Olthoff, speaker, teacher, and chief storyteller for the anti–human trafficking organization The A21 Campaign

“In Spoken For, Robin’s and Alyssa’s gentle honesty and personal stories made me feel as if we were out having coffee together and talking about our love for the Lord. This book is a perfect reminder of how great his love is for us and how sweetly he cares for us.”
—Erynn Mangum, author of Paige Torn

“Anytime two unique voices come together with a unified message, there is power in it. Robin and Alyssa have different perspectives and life stages, but both have experienced God’s relentless love and now want to give it away. Spoken For will help you remember your infinite worth because of Jesus Christ and what potential abounds if you will only embrace it.”
—Jennie Allen, founder of the IF:Gathering and author of Restless

Spoken For: Embracing Who You Are and Whose You Are is the newest book by Robin Jones Gunn, author of the wonderful Christy Miller series, as well as Sisterchicks and many more. She co-authored the book with the lovely Alyssa Joy Bethke. The story of how these two came to collaborate on the book is itself inspiring as we see how God orchestrated the timing and circumstances to get these important words on paper.

Robin and Alyssa both share from their hearts and experiences as they impart important truths about who we are in God's eyes and our worth to him. Both of these authors write not only to their audience, but to themselves, as they remind us that even in the broken times, even when it seems all is lost and we feel alone, that we are children of God. We the Bride of Christ. We are Spoken For. In each chapter, they take turns sharing their stories. Stories of pain, and stories of hope and love. They share the words that God spoke to us in his precious Word to break down the lies of the enemy that are often so easy to believe and replace them with the truths that God wants us to know about ourselves.

As the chapter headings show us, they remind us that each of us is wanted, pursued, loved, have been called, are of great value, are peculiar treasures, are set free, are covered, promised and spoken for. Whether we are single, married, found Mr Right or are still waiting, no matter what our circumstances, these words hold true for all of us.

If you need reminding of how precious you are, how loved you are, how much our Lord and Saviour is pursuing you has His very own, this is the book for you. And who doesn't need to be washed continually in these beautiful truths? This book is a great encouragement.

I could not wait to get my hands on a copy of this book!!!
I have loved Robin Jones Gunn for years and recently became familiar with Alyssa through her husband Jefferson Bethke and his book “Jesus Is Greater Than Religion”. When I heard that these two ladies were coming together to produce a “Spoken For”, I was thrilled.
This book is such a sweet, encouraging, wonderful invitation to fully embrace the relationship God so desperately wants with you.
I love that Robin and Alyssa share experiences from their own lives and faith-walks throughout the book. I really felt I was getting to know them and could totally relate to the things they were saying.
There are wonderful Scriptures highlighted throughout the book as well that spoke straight to my heart about who I am in Him.
I also love love loved the “What Do You Think?” sections at the end of the chapters! These self reflection questions really helped me internalize the points of each chapter.
“Spoken For” is a book I will keep and read over and share with my friends.
This would also make a wonderful study for a church group!

Rejection can be painful for those who see only one side of a situation: theirs.

Spoken For: Embracing Who You Are and Whose You Are begins with stories personal rejections by Robin and Alyssa. They explain how they felt and what recourse was taken to heal.

To help you realize who and whose you are, questions from ‘What Do You Think?’ are at the end of each chapter. The questions evoke you to answer and understand what true love is. Answering the questions gives measure as to where you stand on this issue.

Robin and Alyssa share experiences from their live and use Biblical references as their answer to handling each occurrence.

In Chapter 7 (my favorite)-You Are a Peculiar Treasure, Robin shares a story when she was young. Her friend, Natalie came to visit and expressed her disappointment when her parents did not let her go to the movies with her friends…”it was not the kind of movie she should see.” Robin’s response was to read 2 Timothy 2:21 (TLB), “You are a fine china plate” that needs protection. Have you ever considered yourself to be so precious? I did after reading this section.

Robin Jones Gunn and Alyssa Joy Bethke have collaborated on an easy to follow study guide revolving around true love. The true love they write about is the love of God has for his children (us). We learn to give this same love back in return. I recommend this book to those who wish to challenge themselves to fully love God.

I received this book free from Multnomah Books through the Blogging for Books Review Program for a honest and unbiased review.

In their book Spoken For, authors Robin Jones Gun and Alyssa Joy Bethke set out to help young women discover their identity in Christ—to realize they are bought with a price and “spoken for.”

Spoken For addresses every girl’s inner longings—to belong to someone, to be loved, to be cherished, and to be adored. Gunn and Bethke show young women that they are not only loved intensely and sought after, but they are “the bride-to-be in a love story” that began before they were even born. The authors seek to help young women discover that in Christ they are wanted, pursued, loved and called. On top of that, they are of great value, a peculiar treasure, set free, covered and promised. The authors want readers to see that, in essence, they are spoken for.

Throughout Spoken For, Gunn and Bethke blend scriptures with their own personal stories to paint a picture of how God wants them to embrace who they are in Christ, focusing mainly on their stories of dating, young love, dating, engagement, marriage.

For me, the best part of Spoken For was Gunn’s list of “What God Says About You,” listing evidence straight from the scriptures of God’s unfailing love. God says:
• You were made in my image (Genesis 1:27).
• You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
• I am the Bridegroom and you are my bride (John 3:29).
• I determined the exact time of your birth and where you would live (Acts 17:26).
• What words of comfort, joy and peace for the reader as she takes joy in discovering her identity in Christ!

Overall, Spoken For is biblically sound, and the authors often refer to scripture verses to support their ideas—that women are wanted, pursued, loved, called, and set free. There are a few “What Do You Think?
