5.0 out of 5 stars classic for students of the Bible, October 22, 2010
This review is from: You Have Not Spoken What Is Right About Me (Studies in Biblical Literature) (Hardcover)
According to Pyeon, the key to unlock the menaing of the book of Job is in analyzing the nature and technique of the debates between Job and his friends. He successfully shows two different intertextualities operative in the debate and in the book as a whole. Pyeon sees intertextuality as the deliberate literary technique and poetic tool employed by the author of Job to put forth the most enriched and meaningful message out of the divine speeches in Job 42.

Pyeon suggests that the book of Job is a window to look at the struggles of the post-exilic believing communities who critically and faithfully inheritied pre-exilic faith. And Job shows that the believing communities of the post-exilic era did not just inherit their religous heritage. They thought through it by critically asking the question about divine justice, meaning of life and what it means for them!

In addition, Pyeon well summarizes the recent scholarship of Joban studies. Pyeon's thesis is brilliant. I wish he writes the book about 2nd and 3rd debates between Job and his friends so that his work can be complete. Nevertheless, as it is, Pyeon's book is classic for the student of the Bible. I highly recommend it.
