It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob Squarepants became a star big enough to pull off a concept album. Where so many other megawatt celebrities, be they living and land-based or fictional and sea-dwelling, can get all high-minded and grand when cobbling together a theme for their music, though, our man Sponge proves he's as humble and porous as ever on The Best Day Ever, a 26-track bonanza that delivers us into WH2O studios for a "live broadcast" from Bikini Bottom. Under the phony programmatic direction of snazzy DJ Al Bacore (get it?), SpongeBob & the Hi-Seas--a motley assemblage of characters including Plankton, Squidward, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Sandy--trot out 13 songs between often gut-busting station-based interstitials (in one, hapless caller Patrick can't figure out he's supposed to turn down his radio to hear). The music and lyrics, if not the intentionally doofusy vocals, are inspired: Brian Wilson (how did they get him to agree to this?) sings backup on "Doin' the Krabby Patty," Flaco Jimenez lends Latin flair squeezebox-style on "Barnacles!," and Tommy Ramone of the Ramones hammers out a punkish percussive number on "Ridin' the Hook." Through it all, even when he's baring his soul in a heartwarming serenade to his tighty whiteys, SpongeBob's nice-guy persona sets a friendly, happy tone: the mood, loud and clear as a seal's bark, is pure best-day-ever celebration; the master of ceremonies works his yellowness, squareness and general dim-wittedness to masterful effect. --Tammy La Gorce

Andy Paley and Tom Kenny gave me a copy of "The Best Day Ever", which came out yesterday and it is AWESOME. Andy did the score for MooBeard as well as Camp Lazlo as well as a million other things that rock. You all know who Tom Kenny is. ^_'

Everyone should run out and buy it or download it or do whatever you need to do to get your hands on it ...because it's freakin' sweet. Seriously.

Let me give you a track by track rundown:

1) "WH20 Radio Open" - The album opens with the sound of bubbles and water just like an episode of SpongeBob. Then we hear the sound of someone playing with a radio dial , trying to tune in a station. Then we hear SpongeBob's voice..."Hello Radio Listeners! This is SpongeBob Squarepants! When I'm in Bikini Bottom , I listen to Al Bacore , The Tuneful Tuna on WH2O!". Then we hear four girls singing in sweet harmony "WH2O". Then we hear a new character , Al Bacore, who plays the WH2O D.J. spinning the hits in Bikini Bottom. He tells us that he's premiering the number one album in Bikini Bottom which is SpongeBob and The High-Seas ...."The Best Day Ever"! Story set: SpongeBob's got a band and they've got a number one album... which isn't surprising as it contains:

2) "The Best Day Ever" - This is the song that was in the credit roll of the SpongeBob movie and on the soundtrack. It's a super- Beach Boys pop song with a gentle , fun , shuffle feel like "Wouldn't It Be Nice" or "All Summer Long". It's very lush, with marimba, strings, tympani, harp glissandos by Corky Hale and what sounds like an oboe and an English Horn. Great harmonies too! This one's one of my frequent cell phone ringtones. I've been wanting to do a cover of this one ever since the movie came out, but I can't seem to find the right drum loops for Garageband...

This is probably the best of the Spongebob CD's released to date. It has a cute radio-station theme that is woven in between the songs. Though the first few songs are just repeats of previous albums, there are a number of great new songs. So the CD is worth the money. Parents be aware that there are two songs that deal with "mature" subjects in a childish way (dealing with underwear and saying bad words). Overall a fun album.

I first became aware of SpongeBob a few years ago while working at a community college in Southern California. Two of my student coworkers were totally entranced by the little guy and his colorful world. I checked out the series and was immediately hooked.

Listening to "The Best Day Ever" album really revs up the imagination. The music is full of surpising sound effects that add layers of intricacy to the music. The lyrics and voices evoke such vivid images that you almost feel like you are watching the cartoons as your listening.

here's the thing: if you want an education about the secret history of rock and roll, buy this album, google all the performers on it and start your education. if you're a hipper-than-thou rock and roll geek, you already know all of the names and this is your chance to listen to them playing under the thumb of your favorite mad genius andy paley. if you're just some guy who doesn't care about all that obscure nonsense, you can appreciate that that's brian freakin' wilson backup singing which is something special and this album is worth checking out. if you're a kid, you already have and love this album.

but here's what it boils down to: the songs are great. perfectly crafted pop candy. clever as they are catchy, and they're catchy as hell. what do you want from music? it's here. on this album.

This CD is jam-packed with great stuff. The songs are both hilarious and informative, and I cannot say enough about the performances. While every bit of the singing is truly great, the orchestration of the music is UNBELIEVABLE! Any one of the songs could be a legitimate top ten rock 'n roll hit.

The songs are so catchy, you'll be whistling "Employee of the Month" and "Where's Gary?" all day long.

This CD is really great, and I highly recommend it for kids of all ages. Including adults.

This CD is unique in the way that it almost feels like you are watching a Spongebob episode, but in your stereo, and not on TV. It's great, but I only gave it one star because the CD wasn't playing in my stereo, which really frustrated me. I had no idea what was going on, and I had no choice but to listen to the songs on my Windows Media Player. After hearing it there, this is what I had to say.

Like my title says, great for both kids and grown-ups, anyone who enjoys Spongebob. Each of the different characters from the show has a song about him or her. Some songs are based on episodes, such as Clams [Fishing For Money] and Pressure. [beginning part of Who Wants to Race Me?] There is one continuous story throughout the album -- Bikini Bottom has a radio station called "WH2O" that Spongebob and his band each play different songs on. It also introduces a new character name Al Bacore [AKA the Tuneful Tuna]. The album has 13 radio station interludes, as well as 13 actual songs, and just about all of them are fun, sweet, and catchy.

The only songs that I'm not so sure about are Barnacles and Fishing For Money. Barnacles has always kind of annoyed me [It might be better for littler kids] and Fishing For Money was just boring. My standout tracks are just about every song except for those two. When I wrote this review, I actually had Under my Rock in my head!
Plankton is not in Spongebob's band, but he sings track #20, You Will Obey, because in track #19 he jams the signal and tries to make everyone in town do his bidding.
Bikini Bottom / Rock Bottom is an ominous sounding song that compares Bikini Bottom [Nice and happy town where Spongebob lives] to Rock Bottom [A dark and scary town on the bottom of a trench. SB visited it on accident in the episode "Rock Bottom.
