4.0 out of 5 stars Globs of Fun for the Kids!, November 7, 2008
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SpongeBob SquarePants featuring NickToons: Globs of Doom (Video Game)
Our boys are 5 and 6, so this game was a "gotta try" that ended up being a "gotta have." If you played the Nicktoons Volcano Island, you'll notice some obvious similarities. In short, as you advance to each level a Nick hero is paired up with a Nick villian. It's fun because the hero and villian aren't in the same show. The boys got a kick out of seeing them together. Each character has his/her own special weapon geared to his/her personality. You advance through different stages battling the globs in different settings based on your kiddo's favorite shows. Bikini Bottom is one of our favorite levels. The thing I don't understand is before each level you have to play a short mini-game where the characters slide down the same course collecting coins and avoiding the obstacles. It seems like a filler, although you can upgrade your powers and weapons with the coins at the lab. There is no way to avoid this part, and it's repetitive. The boys think it's okay, although they have started to ask me if they can skip it. In addition, you don't get to choose which two characters participate in the level; those are predetermined. It would have been nice to be able to choose the characters you want in order to try out different weapons on different levels. As you advance, you have major battles with one character at the end of the level. You must defeat him/her to advance. The boys love "beating" this character. I like the teamwork required in this game to advance. Neither of the boys mind being the villan! So far, the boys haven't beaten all the levels, but they do like to go back into the ones they've won and get a better score. This game is worth the money. There's tons of play to be had, and we aren't even close to being done! Enjoy! FYI: This is much better than "Attack of the Toybots."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, not too hard for kids, November 12, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SpongeBob SquarePants featuring NickToons: Globs of Doom (Video Game)
My 4 year old loves his Wii, but he's in between the easy games like Diego and the harder games. It's hard to find games that don't frustrate him, but he did great with this one. He rented it and now it's on his Christmas list. He can't do everything by himself, but he can do most of it. I also like that even if the character falls into the goo over and over, the character doesn't die, so he can keep trying. This is a great game!

3.0 out of 5 stars OK game for under 10 crowd, Serious save game flaw, January 23, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SpongeBob SquarePants featuring NickToons: Globs of Doom (Video Game)
My 6 year old really likes this game (as well as a couple of 8 year old neighbors) and I admit I enjoy playing it sometimes as well. The difficulty level is not too high, in fact given that when you die you restart from that same point (but lose a small number of coins), the game is too easy for me at times, but I can see how it reduces the frustration for kids. The different levels are fairly interesting and varied, and the different characters add some extra variety as well.

I think I would give the game an overall 4 stars (instead of 3) where it not for a major flaw in the save game system: Just about every other time we exit the game, either powering off directly from the main game menu or first exiting back to the main Wii desktop, the save file becomes corrupt somehow. Subsequent attempts to reload it yield a corrupt save game message with the only option being to restart from the beginning. I actually emailed THQ about this, and this is the response:

"This is a known issue. We have noted that the corruption occurs more

often on the even numbered levels. So far, the test team has found that

the corrupt save data occurs when the game is exited while the player is

in the Hub. The Hub would be any portion of the game that is not

directly in a stage or level. Try exiting the game after entering the

next level in order for it to save properly.

Please try the following:

1. Complete stages 1 and 2 of the first level.

2. Upon entering the room with the portals to the other stages, enter

stage 3 and allow it to load completely.

3. Once you are in stage 3, it is safe to exit the game or turn off the

console."

Using the above, I have not seen corruption in the last several plays, but I still think it is something that they should fix and offer replacement disks free of charge.
