This game is not just for young kids-- older kids may find it challenging too because many of the levels aren't that easy. Unlike other Gameboy games that are based off of TV shows, this game was made well and not just some sloppy game made in a rush. This game features most of the familiar places in the TV show, puzzles, bubbles that can bounce, destroy obstacles, float or trap enemies and are used as weapons, and best of all, this game has a password system so you can go back to the level you were on. (However, you have to write the password down so you don't forget it.) But still, at least there's a way to get back to where you were, which proves this isn't some sloppy game made in a rush. Finally, this game has brilliant graphics.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Game!, September 1, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (Video Game)
I love SpongeBob and if you want a great game boy game get this. I just got an advance SP a few months ago and I have all the SpongeBob games for it! Anyway this game has you searching for the flying dutchman's 10 lost treasures, like his lucky boxer shorts, his golden anchor, medal of dishonor, etc, all because the dutchman promised SpongeBob a wish. The graphics are amazing, even though not 3-D. At the end of the game, the duchman ends up taking Patrick,Squidward,Gary,Mr.Krabs, and Sandy. Once SpongeBob rescues them, the dutchman stops them. He won't even give SpongeBob his promised wish! Now SpongeBob has to battle the dutchman to get his wish! When the dutchman is defeated, SpongeBob gets to choose from 3 (or 6 if you got all the coins)wishes! This game is probably based on the episode,"Shanghaied",where SpongeBob also gets to choose from 3 wishes. Now for the other stuff: the sound is great, the music is just like you would hear in the show! So go buy this game now if you don't already have it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A 10-year old's review of this game, December 26, 2002
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (Video Game)
This game is SO fun. As you go it gets challenging but is still pretty cool. I could play all day if I could. My 4 year old brother could play without any help or getting mad that he can't beat a level. It is a great gift. The price is worth it! Buy it!The game is nothing new it has most of the characters in it and the places such as Sandy's house, The Krusty Krabb, and Jelly fish fields etc. If you are a Sponge Bob Square pants fan This is right for you!!!

My 9 year old grandson received it Christmas day, 2002, and his eyes are nearly "square, yellow and full of holes" from playing it so much this past week! I confess that my understanding of the attraction is limited, but HE'S WILD ABOUT IT!!

I really enjoy spongebob, so this game was great. I don't think it was too easy, but not too hard either. Some of the levels are a bit long, but good none the less. Over all, a good game.

I purchased this game for my 4 year old who absolutely loves it. The game is easy enough for him to get through the beginning easily and then challenges him to find out how to conquer harder parts. It would be good for a parent to be close by when kids who can't read yet are playing because that is how you know what type of bubbles you have and what the characters are saying to each other. A good, clean, fun game!

= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (Video Game)
I'm an adult who loves SpongeBob and Game Boy, so this game seemed the perfect combination. At the beginning of the game, Gary runs away and SpongeBob runs after him until he meets up with the Flying Dutchman. A rather humorous dialogue follows. SpongeBob thinks the Flying Dutchman is a genie. The Dutchman explains, "I was imprisoned...I mean, I was enjoying a peaceful slumber..." SB keeps nagging the FD to grant him a wish and the FD finally relents if SB can find his ten pirate treasures.

SB must venture through different environments to collect keys to open up the treasure chests holding the FD's treasures. After each level, he gets a password to the next level. There are also doubloons to collect (gold coins that hang in different places). Each level has the number of doubloons available and, if you collect them all in certain levels, it unlocks additional games. Hint: Make sure you collect all 125 doubloons in level 1 as it opens up the game Jellyfish Jam. In this game, you can collect lives before starting the next level. It is easy because you just have to duplicate the jellyfish's moves. All you need is a pencil, paper, and a quick hand and you can jot down all the moves and copy them. The extra lives will really help you complete each level.

The levels involve using your magic bubble wand (there are liquids which allow you to float, bounce, and break walls) to get through the level to collect the keys and find the treasure chest. Coming into contact with jelly fish will cause you to lose points off your life. There are also familiar characters and episode plots to recognize (Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs, Plantkon, the hooks, Rock Bottom, etc.). You can also gain helpful items like karate gloves and a jellyfish net. The levels are a little challenging, but not too bad. The hooks one was the worst for me. At the top of the screen there are hooks that will knock points off your life when you come into contact with them. When jumping, sometimes you cannot avoid them which is frustrating.

The other frustrating thing is that, after completing each level, the final chapter, Dutchman's Due, did not unlock for me. Ugh! I thought maybe it was because I did not collect 100% of the doubloons in each chapter although neither the game nor the manual indicated that you needed to do so. I went back and tried to collect them all in each chapter but got stuck on that dreaded hooks level! I spent more time playing that chapter than I care to admit and cannot find all the doubloons, so I gave up. It was very frustrating to get through all the chapters and not be able to unlock the finale; therefore, I am knocking off a star from the grade. Otherwise, I thought the graphics were pretty good and the game pretty fun unless you have to collect all the doubloons with the treasure to unlock the final chapter. If that is the case, it could be a real pain in the squarepants!
