5.0 out of 5 stars Great game for kids and SpongeBob fans alike
I just got this as an early christmas present. I was a little afraid that it wouldn't be that great, but once I played it all my fears were put to rest.

GRAPHICS: 4/5. Don't listen to that other guy, the graphics here are really good. Yeah the lip sync doesn't match the dialogue, but who cares? The 3D world looks very nice, and the graphics are bright and colorful. It...

OVERALL (3/5): This is a wanna-be platform game that almost has what it takes to be a good game. But, due to some crippling factors, it dosen't quite achieve excellence.

It does have those trademark PS2 jaggies sometimes, but, oh well.

SOUND: 5/5. The voice acting as, as you may have guessed, the authentic voices of the show: Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbaake, Rodger Bumpass, etc. The music sounds fine, so no complaints here.

CONTROL: 5/5. No complaints here either.

GAMEPLAY: 4.5/5. You do have to do a tad bit of searching sometimes, but other than that it's fine. A little easy, perhaps, but hey, it's all good.

Overall, worth your money.

OVERALL (3/5): This is a wanna-be platform game that almost has what it takes to be a good game. But, due to some crippling factors, it dosen't quite achieve excellence.

GRAPHICS (2.5/5): This is where the game struggles terribly. This could pass a very good playstation game with these graphics, but only a medicore one on the PS2. The mouths don't follow the voices very well, but you can't expect much there. But, the graphics are passable, nothing more than that. I have to say though, the characters look just like they do on the show. So, they pass inspection, barely.

SOUND (5/5): The game excells here. The music is right out of the show, for every costume you put on. The voices are marvelous, straight out of the show as well. Great sound effects as well.

GAMEPLAY (4/5): Not bad. It dosen't really score points for originality because there are many games that make you do the same sort of stuff here, but the free-roam ability is great and really adds to the game. Plus, you get to interact with other characters in the show (Patrick, Sandy, Plankton, Mr. Krabs, etc.), and use devices.

VALUE (3/5): Well, this game is a little too short, but, it's aimed for kids, so it has a good excuse. There are plenty of levels to keep you busy and entertained, so not bad here as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Great and There Is No Glicth!, January 20, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (Video Game)
This is great! The other reviewers said that there was a glitch at the begining of the game. I had no glitch problem! ... This game is fun especially at Jellyfish Fields and Chum World. You have 4 costumes you can put on with different pros and cons. You can dress as Mermaid Man, Jellyfishing Gear, Reef Blower and SquarePants. You can catch Jellyfish and defeat underwater dangers. In one level you deliver food for Mr. Krabs! You also have to do karate matches with Sandy and Larry!

Rating SpongeBob SquarePants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman

Graphics 10/10
Great! There just like the TV show!

Sound and Music 10/10
Great again! You have different music on each level.

Originally 10/10
Great! Changing in costumes and collecting letter tiles is totally oringinal!

This game is great and the loading time is about 5 seconds. I think I am going to buy SpongeBob SquarePants: Legend of the Lost Golden Spetula!

3.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment......, September 11, 2003

This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (Video Game)
Even at 36 years old, I am a huge SpongeBob fan. So, when I got my husband PS2 for his birthday this week, I couldn't wait to try this game.

The graphics and backgrounds are pretty good, and I especially liked the theme song at the beginning. I wasn't too thrilled with the guy with the French accent who kept interrupting to tell me how to do everything - it is very distracting.

Unfortunately, like many others who have posted, the game would stop working when I tried to enter a new room and I had to start all over. I can't believe that the game was released this way.

First of all, this game is very enjoying. Find The Flying Dutchman's treasures and interact with Patrick, Squidward, Sandy, Mr. Krabs and more. Catch jellyfish and spell SPONGEBOB by finding the letters. But, if your game starts freezing every time you enter a new area, welcome to the party. I can't make it out of the first area because the game freezes and quits on me. But, after reading other reviews of this game, it seems that some people don't have freezy games. My other Rugrats game that I rented froze too. So, fun game but warning.

My 8 yr old daughter got PS2 and this game for Christmas from Santa. When the program loads to go into different sections of the game, it frequently ( at least once per 10 minute usage ) cannot read the disk and throws you out to a cannot read disk scenario where u need to start over. For an adult it is very frustrating, for an 8 year old it breaks their heart. I've even returned the game to get a new disk ( same thing ) and ran the disk on my neighbor's PS2... same problem.
I would stay way from this game unless you are willing to put up with this. Saving does help but there are some higher level areas of the game that we have never been able to launch into without the game blowing up as described above. Too bad... nice looking game but they went production with this before a full test evidentally. Rent this game before taking the plunge in purchasing it to see what the reviewers mean by this glitch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game ,but, bewere the glitch, March 30, 2003
This review is from: SpongeBob Squarepants: Revenge of the Flying Dutchman (Video Game)
Spongebob is cool. So is this game. Nick has a history of making bad games(all the Rugrats games, all gbc/gba rocket power games but the PS2 Rocket Power game was good, and nick party blast), but this game is a must have if you are a Spongebob fan. kudos to THQ for making this game(Though i'm still dissapointed about the cancellation of Battlebots). This game has great voice acting, because the voice actors are the people(Tom kenny, (no offence)the fat guy who voices Patrick)but The french narrator doesn't sound anything like him. The graphics are great. The gameplay is great, but it could be a little hard for young kids. I would give it 5 stars, but The first time I bought it, there was a glitch were every time I move to a different area, it would freeze. So, I returned it, but the gitch was still there. So, I returned it permenently.(mis-spelled) Two weeks later, My friend got it and his didn't have a glitch, so I bought it again, and the gitch was gone. Buy it, but BEWERE THE GLITCH!

Add me to the list of people who have the reset problem - the PS2 resets almost every time I change levels. I went to the THQ website, and was surprised to see NO information about this at all under the support section for this game. Have other people sent email to the THQ support group about this? I suggested that they come read the reviews here at Amazon, so they don't think I'm the only one having this problem.

We got SpongeBob for my daughter who loved it. However, it has one very big glitch....It resets in the middle of play! We weren't sure if it was the game or the playstation unit and so tried another video game which played just fine. I returned SpongeBob and got another which played fine for about 1/2 hour and then started doing the same thing. The moral....The game is fun, but save your game ALOT! It became frustrating even for my daughter, a big SpongeBob fan!
