Editorial Reviews

Review

From the authors of Change Your Underwear, Change Your Life, this is a concise and well-documented roadmap for achieving an optimistic attitude and a happy and successful life. Spontaneous Optimism is a secular and contemporary self-help manual somewhat reminiscent of Norman Vincent Peale's popular counterpart, The Power of Positive Thinking. Drs. Mercer and Troiani provide specific practical guidelines in each chapter for achieving a positive outlook and ultimate success. They rely strongly on relaxation techniques, visualization, brief introspective quizzes and the writing, verbalizing and recording of "affirmations" (upbeat phrases) as foundation pieces in a proactive response to life. The authors are professional psychologists who have regularly appeared on national television shows such as Oprah and Jenny Jones. They have presented workshops in Canada, the United States and Europe and boast over 100 professional engagements each year. In a culture where so many individuals are overworked and undervalued, over-stressed and under-confident, over-extended and underpaid, this kind of book provides practical, relevant and straightforward suggestions for coping with and overcoming personal and professional frustration to attain happiness and success. -- From Independent Publisher --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

This tape, and the authors' book, is one of the few self-help books I read that gives advise that is not fluff. It offers practical and unique ways to make your mood and life improved. I thank them both.

I can't seem to pass by a self-improvement book. Seems like there is always some gem of inspiration that I find in each.

Here's what M.J. Ryan who wrote THE HAPPINESS MAKEOVER said about the book in her daily Happiness Booster email:

"Now I know I probably sound like your mother, but motivational speakers Drs. Michael Mercer and Maryann Troiani, authors of Spontaneous Optimism, claim that if you learn to keep your head up, shoulders back and chest out, you'll feel better. "[W}hen you slouch, your mood takes somewhat of a dive. When you notice that, immediately straighten up. That is your first step to boost your mood." See for yourself."

This is not the book that i was looking for to help me to conquer a less than optimistic outlook on the world. I've read and own hundreds of books on various subjects and this is the literary runt of the litter. Insight? I've read better on bathroom walls. Skip it or better yet, read it in the store and make up your own mind. Fluff.
