4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Reading
I must respectfully disagree with some of the negative reviews of this novel. I picked it up because it sounded as if it might be interesting, and I was not disappointed. It is suspenseful and entertaining, with a clever and satisfying twist to conclude the plot. Well done, Mr. Vance!

3.0 out of 5 stars Surprise ending?
OK- the plot takes us there, the self-conscious feel of a small town in the South, multiple murders and a secret that threatens at every turn. In the end you smile and put the book down. Yes, it's expected, and yes you can't help but feel a little cheated. However, the first few chapters introduce the reader to such possibilities that I can't help but think that Steve...

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than most of the Amazon reviewers thought, May 15, 2004

Very good book. I'm surprised at the negative reviews here.

Positive reviews might have raised their expectations too high. Try to go in unspoiled: don't read the book jacket or the reviews.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fair Plot Ends In a Disappointing Resolution, August 29, 1999
By

This review is from: Spook: A Novel (Hardcover)
While this book did not stray too far from the limits of reality as do many horror books, which make them a little too hoakey, it's poor and unlikely resolution really hurts the power that the book might have even been able to possess.

2.0 out of 5 stars One Bad Book, December 2, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Spook: A Novel (Hardcover)
Spook was a book with a good theme, good ideas and a good resolution, but Steve Vance could have done a better job at creating suspense in the novel. He also should have explained the ending clearer and the climax should have been more obvious. Some of the characters were interesting and the storyline was good. It just was not written very well and had a lot of boring conversations and no interesting parts to it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sucky Book, December 2, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Spook: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book looks interesting to the naked eye, but trust me-its not! The storyline is not very in-depth and although the characters seem promising, they are not put to good use. Too much detail on the boring parts and not enough on the interesting ones, this book did not have any suspense. The resolution was foreshadowed very obviously and there was no climax. The bok was a boring read and I do not recommend it to anyone. I didn't have to sleep with the lights on and reading this book in the middle of a haunted house would not make it scary.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe the worst book I ever read., November 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Spook (Paperback)
This might have been the worst book I ever read. It had some characters, scenes, and plots that showed promise, but they didn't really go anywhere, and the "surprise" ending was just surprisingly stupid. Don't waste your time.
