Editorial Reviews

2010 release, the fourth album from the Reggae-influenced Australian trio. The exotic passion that stirs the souls of Mat McHugh and his rhythm compadres, Paulie B and Bruce Braybrooke, begins to drip like some rare and potent elixir from the opening beats of Spooks. The rich production and stylistic threads run deep, pure and almost mystically familiar; albeit a world apart from the ubiquitous Bob Marley borrowings of the Australian summer festival scene.

The opening track trumpets the return of the Beautiful Girls. If you have enjoyed the Girls on previous releases, you will like Spooks. The vibe is a fantastic mix of easy going and upbeat. They've upped the reggae and added more horns. Add a little ukulele, bouncy keyboards, crunchy guitar, acoustic guitar, and you have an eclectic mix that makes this arguably the Girls most diveres sounding release to date.

Fun effort by one of my favorite bands. This effort is clearly a bit more polished than their earlier releases with an underlying Bill Laswell influence. I warmed up to the tracks immediately although I miss some of the raw emotion and poignant storytelling from prior releases. The band is solid and dynamic throughout. Mat McHugh's lyrics and music have continued to evolve. This release was a bit harder to put my hands on but was worth the effort. It definitely has some high points...notably Rockers!. If you are a Beautiful Girls fan it is worth having in your collection.

I am a big fan of the "Girls" previous releases and was very excited for this album to hit the streets. As with Jack Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static", I can enjoy listening to "Spooks" but would rather throw in an older, more basic release. Keep it simple.

Its really their best album yet! Don't get me wrong, their other albums had some killer tracks but this is their first album where I have absolutely loved every single track. They are a great band.

I love their variety - a little reggae, a ballad, a rock song. Great horns and drums. I can listen to these guys for houors.
