If you have yet to become acquainted with Bill Peet books, you're in for a treat! His vibrantly colorful illustrations are fantastic and his stories very engaging. I remember as a child how my imagination would run and frolick around in his wonderful stories and pictures.Prewitt Peacock's story is no exception. It's a tale of a... well... a tail. Prewitt's tail is different from the other peacocks' tails, and he's subsequently an outcast. His tail isn't quite what it seems, however, and what was once his weakness becomes his greatest strength. Without being melodramatic, Bill Peet's story can teach a child that it's OK to be different - what sets you apart can make you special, too! This book comes highly recommended for all kids (and their parents)!

I loved Bill Peet books as a child, and I still really like them today. I recently bought the whole set so that my children will have them, and realized that I remember every character and every plot from 20+ years ago when my parents read them to me. They really made an impact on me. The illustrations are cute and captivating, the characters are engaging, the stories and well told, and each book has a meaning. There are few authors who can create such a fine balance in childrens' books.

A monstrously fabulous tail tale,

This review is from: The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock (Sandpiper Books) (Paperback)
Prewitt the peacock is anything but proud. His pathetic, scraggly tail with only two eyespots is nothing to boast about. Even worse, one day his tail goes wild and turns into a "green-eyed monster." The two eyespots grow larger, fierce eyebrows and a mouth appear and two of the feathers look like scary arms. The other peacocks don't like the look of his new, spooky tail and tell him to leave or get rid of his monstrous feathers. However, Prewitt's weakness becomes his strength as his unique tail becomes a useful weapon in a dangerous jungle. Peet's story is funny and memorable plus it also teaches a valuable lesson, the importance of being who you are by maintaining your individuality despite oppression. The illustrations are spot-on and full of expression (and a monstrous face). You can't help but feel sad for poor Prewitt and cheer when he triumphs.

This is probably one of our most favorite books. About a peacock with a scary tail. He is teased because of it, until one day it comes in very handy!
Child is now almost 8 and still loves this book and the illustrations. Highly recommended!

The Spooky Tail of Prewitt Peacock,

This is a book I remember from my own childhood so I wasn't sure my 8-year-old would like it. It doesn't have "cute" illustrations like most books have now. It has a lot of words compared to many books we read. But I decided to try it and he enjoyed it!
Prewitt Peacock lived in the jungle with other wild peacocks. His tail was only a few scraggly feathers with only two eyespots and he was not proud of it. Over time, Prewitt's tail grew but now his tail looked like a monster! It scared the other peacocks so the leader peacock told Prewitt he had to keep his tail down or leave the flock. That night Prewitt dreamed a strange dream about an elephant missing his trunk, a giraffe missing his neck, a camel missing his hump and a peacock missing his tail. The next morning Prewitt told the leader that he would be staying with the flock AND keeping his tail up. The leader was mad and told all the other peacocks to grab one of Prewitt's feathers. The chase was on. Eventually they ended up in an open field where they saw the one tiger who was always trying to get them. Just then, the tiger let out a yowl and ran away. That's when everyone noticed Prewitt's tail was up and that was what scared the tiger away. From that day on, all the peacocks stayed close to Prewitt and Prewitt was proud as a peacock. |
