Excellent Reference Guide,
By Byron W. Wallace (Harlingen, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico (Paperback)
This book is an excellent reference guide for identifing gulf and bay fishes, and contains very little "how-to" information. Fish are separated into families. Each fish has a detailed color illustration, common name(s), and scientific name, plus a short description of each of the following categories: physical description, range, habitat, typical sizes, food value, game quality, typical tackle and bait, and a very short description of typical fishing methods. 185 fish are pictured in all, including sharks, stingrays, baitfish, and a number of other fish that may be encountered even though they are not normally thought of as sportfish.

Good Book and Reference,
By Philip R Forrest (Orange Beach, AL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico (Paperback)
This book is well written and nicely cross referenced. When it's not on my boat during a fishing trip, it stays in the throne room for good reading. The only complaint I have is that the author seems to think nearly every fish in the sea is tasty. Only a few of the fish in the book are labeled as "Poor" when it comes to food quality.

Best Guide To Identify Fish...,
By "nole_fisher" (Tallahassee, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico (Paperback)
If your trying to find out what is on the end of your line... I would suggest this book. It has good illustrations of many fish and a few other interesting facts about them. It also covers the whole gulf area rather than selecting a state or two. The only draw back is it doesn't include great detail on how to catch each particular fish.

I bought this book to replace the one my son lost in Hurricane Katrina. There were options for newer editions, but he was so fond of this one. He is a huge fan of fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and loves this book! I just ordered another one for my sister!

As a long time gulf fisherman, I still catch a "what's this?" This book is concise, has the information needed (including pictures), but is not wordy, It is a great primer for my grandchildren who fish with me. It stays in the console of my boat. A great gift for gulf fisherman. Got here fast and in good condition.

I like this book. The descriptions of the fish are good. It is an easy book to use and well laid out. The main thing I would have wanted to be improved upon was the discussion of where the fish could be found. I would have liked a little more specificity here. If I want to fish for a particular species, this book doesn't narrow down where I could expect to find it very well.

Fishing is Fun Again,
By Rabid Reader (Near Niagara Falls, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sport Fish of the Gulf of Mexico (Paperback)
I love to fish, but most of my experience is on the Great Lakes.
Suddenly, I began fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, and became literally "lost at sea" when it came to the fish I was pulling out of the water. I didn't recognize them (What IS that???), knew nothing about them. . . and was wary of them because most (ok, all) of them have teeth, if not poisonous spines! Enter this book. After reading through it several times--and despite being a field guide it is wonderfully readable--I now recognize my catches, and even catch fish more often due to the helpful angling tips. The illustrations couldn't be better, and the organization of the information is clear and sensible. I'd recommend this for anybody: an adult fisherman like me or even a child who sits on the end of the dock with a pole.

This book does a great job of identifying a wide range of Gulf Coast species. It's a great tool for rookie and veteran anglers alike. I've been fishing for well over 20 years and I learned a lot from reading this book. A couple of the features that I enjoyed particularly are the food value, and angling tip sections.

After shopping for a book of this nature, I got tired of the book store prices and was glad when I found it at Amazon.com. Shortly after placing my order, I found it at Wal-Mart for about $7.00 more. Always Low Prices should be Amazon's slogan. Great book to own with great details such as: food quality, how to fish for, avg. size and weight etc.

With so many restrictions and diffrent types of fish in the gulf, the last thing you want is an illegal fish. "Sport Fish of the Gulf" is on my vessel when I fish!
