I had two issues with this knife which made me return it for a replacement.

First, the blade was crooked. Looking down the spine, back to front, the blade came out of the handle at an angle left of center. This is unacceptable for a cheap knife, let alone one priced at $84. Frankly, I don't see how this particular knife passed quality control.

Second: The scandi grind was uneven. One side was flatter than the other, and about a 1/4" from the tip, the steel was noticeably thicker.

Also worth noting, the cutting edge was only moderately sharp. I own a Helle Alden, which came absolutely razor sharp. Hmmm.... why couldn't the Viking come just as sharp as the Alden? My last nit pick is that the spine will not produce sparks from a fire steel. This is not a deal breaker... just an inconvenience, as it is one less task for which the knife could be used.

On the positive side, the birch handle is nice looking and seems to be solid. It fit my hand well and was comfortable in the various grip positions. I also like the simple design and rugged appearance. I like that the top portion of the blade, above the scandi grind, was left black. IMO, this adds positively to the aesthetics of the knife.

I hope this was just a dud. Looking forward to an acceptable replacement.

Update:

I received the replacement, and it was exactly like the first. In fact, it seems to be the exact same knife! Great customer service... not! luckily I found a local buyer and won't have to send it back to Amazon. Unbelievable!!! Amazon has lost more than a few points with me.

Awesome knife. Rugged, well made , and extremely sharp I wear it as an alternative to a pocket knife. Well worth the money investment.

I read some of the other reviews of this model and all I can say is my Viking came nearly flawlss out of the box. The grind on the blade was even and well executed. The blade was straight and without and warpage or bending. The simple oiled handle fits my paws perfectly.

I have used the Viking for processing game, slicing bread, batoning kindling, carving tent pegs, cutting rope and paracord, chopping branches, and dtarting fires with a faro rod. It handles all these tasks with aplomb, and in the year that I have had it I have only sharpened it once.

Two things to make sure you do:

Keep the blade oiled. I made the mistake of cleaning this knife and forgetting to put a thin coat of olive oil on it. It ended up rusting and I had to take steel wool to it. I managed to remove the rust but the blade is now spotted.

Make sure you take care not to hit the cutting edge against a stone, rock or concrete surface. The center lamination in the blade is exteremely hard and will chip easily.

Great knive, all that I expected. High quality and beautiful wood handle. Definitely looks like a knife that the Norse would have used. Good and expedient service from seller.

I like the rustic look of the knife. It comes with heat treat scale left on the blade like a Viking era blacksmith who was in a hurry to turn out a few knives might have done. The handle is a nice looking piece of wood, firmly fitted to the blade and it fits the hand tolerably well. Great sheath! The blade is laminated steel, two strips of soft steel for strength laminated onto each side of a core of hard steel for sharpness and edge holding. The knife's downfall is it's edge grind. They attempted to scandi grind the edge. I say "attempted" because they didn't get it done. The grind is visibly way off center, so far off that the hardened core of the blade is entirely on one side of the edge grind, not centered on the edge itself as it's supposed to be. The actual edge of the knife is on the soft steel lamination on the left side of the blade. The grinds on each side of the blade are even at very different angles. The whole effect is to make this a knife-shaped object because it cannot function as a knife in this condition. Unfortunately, one of our pups got hold of the sheath and chewed the leather thong off, or I would return the knife. Maybe I can get the edge reground properly, an operation that looks like would take about 1/8 - 1/4" off the width of the blade in order to center the edge on the hardened core. Or maybe I'll just leave it as-is in my collection as a reminder not to buy Helle knives again. VERY disappointing. One star is too much for this 'knife' so give it to the sheath instead.

The handle has a very small crack along the spine. The blade is ground left of center, which is desastrous for a laminated steel knife. The steel it presents at the edge is likely one of the softer outer layer signicantly limiting the edge retention. I'm a custom knife maker. For the very minimal production requirement for this rat tail zero ground blade with neither handle pins nor bolsters, the VERY LEAST they could have done is quality check this thing before it left the factory.

I checked bladeforums and other sites online and found out that off center grinds are a common occurrence with this company. Disappointing. Do a Google search for "heller knives uneven grind" and you will see quite a few accounts, or check out this blogger's thorough review from 2011 to see what a typical example is like: They have not improved since: woodtrekker.blogspot.com/2011/03/helle-viking-review.html.
