Book Description

January 24, 2000

Harness the power of your own mind! Hypnosis is now a mainstream, modern training technique used by top professionals; it's not the submissive state that has been portrayed in movies and misunderstood by the public. It can help you sharpen your mental focus, relax your body, visualize success, stimulate healing, and control your emotions during training or when facing important competitions.

The positive effects are similar to what sport psychologists, coaches, and athletes refer to when they talk about “getting in the zone.” In this state of mental functioning you channel attention and energies fully toward the task at hand. Sport Hypnosis is a guide to that special psychological realm and the higher performance athletes aspire to.

First, Sport Hypnosis presents an overview of mental training and hypnosis. Next, the book provides specific information on how you can use hypnosis to enhance a variety of mental skills. These skills include relaxation, imagery, goal setting, concentration, easing pain, and increasing inner strength. Finally, because athletes rarely focus on one skill at a time, Sport Hypnosis describes in detail how coaches and athletes can apply and combine different hypnotic techniques. Five case studies explain how athletes improved several aspects of their performance through hypnosis. You'll read how hypnosis helped a soccer player eliminate a long-standing, debilitating hamstring pain and how a basketball player achieved a higher free-throw percentage.

Author Dr. Don Liggett presents the hypnosis techniques that he has applied effectively with athletes in many different sports. You can adopt these techniques readily to your own training and competitions. If you're looking for a way to improve the mental side of your performance equation, Sport Hypnosis just may be the edge you need to become a champion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sports Hypnosis, reviewed by Christopher R. Newton, December 19, 2000
By
Mr. C. R. Newton (Chester, Cheshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sport Hypnosis (Paperback)
This book is excellent. As a sports hypnosist myself, I understand it's potential value in so many immediately relevant areas. It covers a wide range of examples, but not just American sports like American football and baseball. This book has worldwide appeal

The writing style clear, without vague generalisations.

It covers pain relief - an all too common problem. It goes into establishing a rapport with cynical clients, by giving immediate solutions to some of the many problems sportsmen and women face everyday

As some of you will already know sports hypnosis is able to improve anyones abilites. Running faster, make them stronger than before.

Don't forget hypnosis is not a conjuring trick, it's for real, with no use of drugs.

Best wishes to all Christopher R. Newton

4.0 out of 5 stars Sports Hypnosis Works !, April 20, 2009
By
George Guarino (Albany, New York, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sport Hypnosis (Paperback)
Good well-rounded approach to using hypnosis for enhancing sports performance. I certainly will use some of Mr Liggett's methods when working with my sports clients.

However, being over 10 years old, this book deserves to be revised. His insistance on using only a hypnotist with an advanced medical degree is a bit old fashioned. Certainly one needs to work with a qualified hypnotist who knows how to handle special situations that may come up (like how to handle an abreaction) but there are many well trained professional hypnotists who can do this work without being a Psychologist; perhaps even better. At the time of this writing he doesn't seem to recognize the National Guild of Hypnotists either.

A very good book for all those who want to work with sports mental-conditioning. It doing give step by step methods that I will refer to often.

Another thought; funny how I held off buying this book for a couple years just because of the cover picture of a young man whom I guessed was the author. It turns out that Mr. Liggett is an older gentleman who is pictured inside the book. I guess some professional in 'marketing' felt that the younger man's picture would help sell the book. Perhaps it has overall, but it held me back.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent survey and introduction, February 19, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sport Hypnosis (Paperback)
A serious and informative introduction to a murky subject. A variety of athlete examples are given (kayaking, pole-vaulting, basketball, football) but alas, nothing directly pertinent to what I wanted.
