I bought this looking for the cheapest way to get out on the water. I spent a boatload on my board already and I figured a paddle is a paddle. And even though I knew it would be heavier, I just thought it would help tone my arms faster and make me stronger. I'd go back in time and change that decision if I could. Here's what I learned:

1) It's flexible...which means that you do not reap the energy you put into your stroke because it gets absorbed by the shaft.
2) It's also heavy...I mean REAAAALLY heavy. And unlike my naive assumption that I'd get a better workout from the extra weight, it just makes me tire faster and my neck, back, and shoulder muscles ache. This makes me not want to paddle as often or as far which defeats the entire purpose of why I got into SUP.
3) The paddle surface is poorly designed which means you're not moving enough water to be effective in anything other than glass conditions nor do you have proper control of your board. You just can't get a good catch.

My lesson learned: save up for the best paddle you can afford. I have since bought an all-carbon paddle and am in love with it. What a different experience! I'm quicker, more agile, and can paddle all day long without the slightest fatigue. And the brand I bought only makes paddles - which means all their R&D is focused on paddles. It shows. Worth every penny.

Good for the price. However, if you are debating between this and the carbon fiber pole and wondering if it is worth the extra money: It is.

I was concerned that the shaft might bend since it's retractable but I haven't noticed anything after several uses. I have a cheap paddle for my other kayak that bent very quickly but this one seems much stronger. Performs exactly as I expected.
