Product Description

The Sport Solar Oven will help you become prepared for an emergency. It is also good for camping trips, beach parties, fishing trips, back yard barbecues and everyday cooking. You no longer have to pack heavy and messy charcoal or flammable fluids. Using the Sport Solar Oven keeps the heat out of the kitchen and takes advantage of free sun power. Now you can cook food without electricity in an easy and safe way. The Sport Solar Oven cooks almost every type of food: bakes/stews all meats, poultry and fish; steams vegetables; bakes breads, cakes and cookies; cooks rice, beans, lentils, and pasta. It is specially designed to maintain steady, moderate (210-260 F) cooking temperatures that produce tender, tasty and healthy foods without burning. The Sport is like a "solar crock pot". Because no extra water is added, the flavors and vitamins in the food are not leached out or diluted and flavors blend deliciously. To use, simply place the food in the pots provided, place the Sport facing the sun and forget it. The sun does the rest. The SOS Sport comes with a reflector that increases the amount of sunshine going into the oven. The reflectors are designed for areas far from the tropics when the solar oven competes with cold air temperatures and a lower angle of the sun.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Superior Solar Oven July 7, 2012
I own both the Global Sun Oven brand solar oven and a Solar Oven Society "Sport" Solar Oven. Both of them get used often (weather permitting) and I am glad I own each of them.

If I had to make a choice between the two I would definitely take the SOS Sport Solar oven.

The Global Sun Oven gets hotter quicker, but the SOS Sport Oven is the superior piece of equipment.

The SOS Sport Solar Oven reliably heats up to about 220f and stays there. It will not get so hot that it will ever burn your food - but it will brown breads and meats. The SOS Sport also will cook two dishes at once.

The SOS Sport Solar Oven is also less expensive than the Global Sun Oven, is a "green" product made by a legitimate Not For Profit organization; is made from recycled materials, is made in the USA, and does not out gas when used.

I painted the interior of my SOS Sport Solar oven and the exterior of the pots/lids with hi-temp flat black paint to further improve the light/heat absorption of the oven. I have also found various other pots, trays, sheets and a small oblong Dutch oven that fit into the oven chamber of the SOS Sport (and have painted their exteriors with hi-temp flat black also). For the cookie sheets I use a 9x16 inch piece of heavy aluminum foil sheeting that I cut from the bottom of a disposable aluminum turkey pan. I painted one side flat black with hi-temp black paint and I just lay it over the cookie sheet or bread trays (laying it with the black side facing up).

All in all the SOS Sport Solar Oven is a winner. It is well made, affordable, easy to use, and is an effective piece of equipment. I use mine (and the Global Sun Oven) often, especially during the summer because by using my solar ovens I do not have to use my regular oven - so I thus do not have to use electricity nor pay for the energy to run my A/C to cool the area after heating the kitchen by cooking with my regular stove/oven.

And for emergency situations The SOS Sport Solar Oven is a great piece of equipment to own. Add to this a Stovetec One Door Deluxe rocket stove, and a Saratoga Jack's 7Ltr Two Pot Thermal Cooker, and a portable single burner butane camping stove and Vola! You have the capacity to cook without fuel on sunny days, to heat/cook a meal by means of wood or any bio-combustable during night-time or inclimate weather, and to cook indoors when necessary day or night - and all without power from the grid.

SOS Sport Solar Oven
Thermal Cooker
Stovetec rocket stove
Single burner butane camping stove

Plus

Ceramic water filter
At least three 5 gallon buckets with lids
One 5 gallon bucket toilet (with lid)
A roll of toilet paper (placed in a zip-lock bag)
Leatherman Wave multi tool
Crank and/or solar powered emergency radio (with lithium AA battery backup)
LED flashlights with lithium AA batteries
Several extra lithium AA batteries
96 hours worth of all your meds (in water proof pill bottles)
A basic medical emergency kit
One full change of clothes per person
Some cash
A few power/sport drinks (Gatorade, etc)
A few 5 hour energy drinks
Bottled water
A few cans of soup/stew or canned food that you like
A can opener (w/bottle opener)
Sterno or a can of chaffing fuel (if you haven't got a butane stove)
A pot with a lid
One spork per person

This is all simple, basic, easily available stuff. Purchase it piece by piece as you can. Put all of it that will fit into the 5 gallon buckets, put the lids on them - and remember that you have it when you need it if an emergency arises.

I hope this helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sport Oven a good investment July 9, 2012
I have owned the Solar Sport Oven for about 4 years and it has stood up to heavy daily use. I cook with it for about 8 months out of the year (March through October). It has withstood the elements (the sun can be vicious where I live) and was a worthwhile investment. I highly recommend this oven to anyone interested in solar cooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! August 19, 2012
I've had my Sport oven for almost 5 years. One of the first things to pack-up every summer when camping comes around to Northern Calif. Place my uncooked evening meal in one of the pots in the a.m., head out on the river prospecting all day, return to camp 6 hours later, dinner's done! Tasty, no fuss, no burnt food, one pot to clean! I have made everything from beef stew, French bread, beans and ham hocks, brownies, chili and rice, .......man......I'm hungry! You can't go wrong with the Sport!
