I have two medium size mutts. Chase is laid back but loves to run and play and Rufus is a very timid and scared of alot.

First off let me say this make sure the range is adjusted on the box before putting the batteries in the collars. My husband was holding the collar in his hand inside the house (far away from the lines) and got shocked on the 5th level! Ouch! We readjusted the range to two feet from the line and truned the collar down to level 2 after that.I think the range came out of the box set on 40 feet

I took chase out on a leash and let him lead me to the perimiter rather than me taking him over there and tossing a toy or treat across the line like youre instructed too. It only took him 2 times of trying to cross over the fence before he realized that he didnt wanna go anywhere near those flags. He LOVES playing fetch but you better believe if that ball goes NEAR that fence he will NOT even try to go get it! We did have one incident the other day where there was a cat in the back yard and Chase blew through the fence and did not even flench when he was getting shocked! However, ever since then he has been even more reluctant to get close to the fence so I think the level 5 shock hurt him enough that he wont be doing that again (The shock level increases as they cross the perimeter).

Rufus was a different story. I let him lead me to the perimeter just as I did for Chase and once he got shocked he was terrified of his yard. We would lead him around and show him all the places he could go but he would never leave our side. When we would let him out by himself he would not even leave the back porch. We tried for 2 weeks to get him used to it but he never did. I called the company for advice and they instructed me to start over.

Researched in ground fence systems extensively and purchased the SportDog system for my ¾ acre property. Glad I did. Easy to install with quality hardware........unlike other systems I looked at. Purchased primarily for our Lab puppy, but also purchased two smaller compatible collars for our two miniature wiener dogs. It maybe took a day or so for all of our dogs to associate the flags with the boundary. System has multiple settings, so you can set a vibration, beep, then mild shock. I think our dogs were shocked once each. Now, when they get close to the boundary flags, the (non-shocking) vibration is enough to alert them to turn around. $220 is a bargain for the peace of mind in knowing that my dogs will stay in the yard.

We live on 7 acres of unfenced property. We have a 1 1/2 year old very energetic chocolate lab. We would let Duke outside and he always wanted to wander and explore. He would always come back but I was very concerned about his safety as we have a paved road that carries a fair amount of traffic. My fear was he would run out in front of someone and get hit or cause them to have an accident. For this reason we had gotten to the point of putting him on a cable ANYTIME he was outside which was really not fair to him. So I started looking at underground containment systems. I did a lot of shopping and this system was getting the best reviews. Also I like the fact it can handle up to 100 acres if I ever get the urge to expand his boundary. For now, the 1000 feet has worked out just fine.....gives him more than ample room to run.

Installation was simple and straightforward but fairly labor intensive when it comes to burying the wire. I rented a gas powered lawn edger which was perfect for digging the trench....this was a big time and muscle saver. We laid the wire out in the pattern we wanted, hooked it up to the box to make sure we were getting connectivity and then I just trenched as close to the wire as I could get. We used a wooden paint stick to push the wire into the trench and tried to cover everything up as best we could.

When all was buried and hooked up, we installed the flags as detailed in the setup instructions. Now let's see if this thing works.

Results - I was really concerned whether any radio controlled device could contain Duke because he is the most energetic dog I have ever seen. He loves to run and he does it with fireplace logs in his mouth which he has pulled from our wood pile.

WORKS. Have been using ours for years. No problems in snow. Have a dog that "tested" for warning, so, we had to eventually go off manual and use no warning, but, that worked. Would have liked a "Sportdog Fencing" sign for mailbox. A dog running at you with no visible means of containment can scare the neighbors. Also, it would warn that a dog was on the property without saying she's dangerous, like a beware or caution sign would. No fence I found has such a sign. We are still very happy with the SportDog fencing. One of the probes drops off once a year or so with daily use and there are no extras. Order ahead (the type with the exposed threads) so you're not stuck.

OUR INSTALL--super easy and no equipment. Went to the hardware store and got yard staples and surface installed it. Used 150 staples for our 1/3 acre (roughly 1 every 2 feet). It works and we have not had any problems mowing. It will also be easier to move the wire if there is a signal issue from equipment or from a neighboring invisible fence install later, or, we move. After a year, I couldn't even see the wire up close. For the driveway, bought asphalt crack tape and taped the wire down. It works. In addition, there's no damaging cut in our driveway where water can seep in, freeze, and cause cracks. Only twice now, because we have drivers that drive off the edge of the drive, the connection there had to be fixed, but, it is a surface mount, so, that was easy. Still only had to do that twice. The wire is pretty sturdy. Imagine repairing a break underground.

Winter 2012-3 the asphalt tape broke away and you can't apply it in the cold. (To be fair, we have more than average use of our drive.) Bare wire held up just fine, though.
