We purchased this system due to the fact that we have 5 acres of open land and lots of neighboring cows for our dogs to chase. With my 2 older dogs, who have always been able to run loose, we took about two weeks of training them as instructed. They had no problem in learning. We then brought a young dog to our home who had always been enclosed in a yard with chain link fencing. Trained one very briefly, on lowest setting it ran thru boundary fencing, turned up the power, and along with the flags, the dog never ventures near boundary. Two very young strays, with whom we could not train due to the fact that they would not do the leash....put the collars on them, they accidentally went into boundary, with our visual supervision over a period of about a week, and they did not attempt doing that again. We then had to put boundary fencing around the area of where we park our cars, due to the destructive natures of the younger dogs who scratched several cars chasing a cat, they do not enter the boundary zone....in fact, when flags went up, they totally understood their meaning!!! excellent product that works with any age or stubborness of dogs. i highly recommend this product. Also, works just as well after water exposure, as our dogs love the pond, water does not affect the products effectiveness. i give this system 5 stars.

Just came in the mail. I was expecting to receive the orange collar as pictured, but received a black one instead. I have 2 dogs and really was hoping to have 2 different colored collars. We haven't installed the fence yet, so I can rate how well the collar works.

I love the invisible fence system these people sell, it was easy to instal and maintain. My only gripe would be on the collars themselves. The screws absolutely suck. Maybe it is just my dogs or even me, but the screws get dirt/sand/debris lodged into the head of the screw and just underneath enough to make turning the screw a pain in the rear. When I need to change the battery, I try to clean the screws out to the best of my ability so I can get a screwdriver in. This is a pain and it seems like there should be a better way. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know.

For months I've been shuffling the original collar between two dogs, however, it wouldn't take long for the one w/o the collar to escape the yard. The additional collar makes life much easier and works as effectively as the original. Amazon provided the best price available. Thanks...

This product is probably great under ideal conditions. The problem I have is that my yard is only about 1/2 acre. Once I bought the product and installed it I started having problems. I spoke with customer service several times and I was told that my yard was probably to small for this system. Also several things can magnify the radio signal making your dogs get zapped in the middle of the yard (e.g. any type of underground utility such as a neighborhood phone cable). I have to turn the range on low and turn the knob down to 2 out of 10 before it will work. Anything higher than 2 makes the collars shock the dogs if they turn a certain way or lay on the ground. As you can imagine the dogs are very confused now. Since I cannot turn the range up more than the setting of 2 the dogs have to get within abour 1 to 2 feet of the wire before they start recieving the correction. I have a husky that is very smart and bad so she has figured out if she starts running she can get through the perimiter without getting shocked. If I had to do it over again I would have bought one of the fences without a wire. These will continue to "correct" until the dog gets back within the perimiter. The buried wire types will only correct in the range established by the knob setting which may not be enough with a small yard.If you decide to use this product my advise is to scalp the grass, use turf tacks to hold the wire close to the ground, and let the grass roots hold it down. This is what I eventually had to do to make my work decently. I still have to either put my husky on a run or go and find her every 3 or 4 days. If you are interested in buying this system without the wire let me know. [...]

We had to purchase a second collar for our geriatric male lab when putting the Petsafe SportDog wireless fence in specifically for our 1 year old male lab mix. Initially I was a little worried that the correction was going to be too stressful for our older dog or that he wasn't going to be able to hear the audible warning the collar makes, neither of these worries occurred. The collars have several levels of correction that you can set for each dog's temperament, etc.. Turned out that we had to set the old dog's correction at level 3 whereas the young dog only required a level 2. It was a little traumatic the first few days of training and the dogs didn't want to get off the porch but we remained patient with them and now they totally know their boundaries and feel free to wander and play within their invisible fence line. Both seem more secure and less territorial having their boundaries well defined for them. The dogs are comfortable in the collars and we only take them off when they go into the kennel or are on a leash. Another bonus is that the batteries are 9 volt and are convenient and inexpensive to replace. Should have implemented this system 10 years ago.

Except that the photo made me believe this was orange the product arrived black but quickly and works. Orange would have bene preferred since the original was mis-located somewhere areound the house.

I installed this system about 2 months ago. Simple and economical. Digging the trench without the proper tools was the hardest part of it. Tool rental places had trenchers that were too big for the job. Once I got that part done, the rest was a piece of cake. Have a small dog about 4 years old. He learned quickly. Now getting a second collar for my Giant Schnauzer puppy 4 months and 50 pounds. She is also learning quickly. The system is reliable and not expensive. Priced similar system and for 1 acre lot, I had quotes of around $1200. The SportDog system and and extra collar, it was under $400. Not bad at all. Highly recommend it.

Bought this second collar for our other dog when we purchased the whole system. It wasn't orange as pictured (thankfully), and was the exact same collar that came with the fence system. This is a great, sturdy collar and can be trimmed to fit any size dog.

We've had this product for 3 years...little late on the review but here goes. First of all the company is wonderful. We had an issue with our transmitting unit (not the collar) in the first shipment. It took us awhile to install the wire underground so we didn't discover this for almost 2 months. We called up the company, and they shipped a replacement out immediately, worked great ever since. Our lab has used the collar since puppy hood, we never had to shock our dog, we left it on vibrate only and she got the message. She won't even approach the boundary line. In fact, she really hasn't needed to wear the collar at all for years. The battery died once, and we didn't know for who knows how long because she rarely goes near the line to get the warning beeps. But she stays in the yard even just wearing her leather collar too so maybe she's just 100% trained on the in your yard concept. We live on a saltwater creek and were initially afraid the saltwater would corrode the wire, but three years later and still going strong. We love this product, getting another collar for our new dog and since it took our lab about 3 days to figure it out (even though we completed the full two week training) I'm sure he'll do fine with it too. Love that you can just add a collar, many systems make you buy another transmitter and that would get pretty expensive! It does take a little trial and error to get the range right on the transmitter unit, but that's why there are so many settings you can choose from...it's fully adjustable to any situation. Highly recommend the company and the product. |
