About Sportcraft:
The General Sportcraft Company was founded in 1926. In those times, most department stores did not carry sporting goods, so General Sportcraft helped pioneer the concept of "family-fun" departments within the store. Soon, the popularity of these departments spawned stand-alone sporting goods stores.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Sportcraft introduced new outdoor games to America, such as bocce, horseshoes, and volleyball. In time, Sportcraft's focus moved to indoors games like table tennis, billiards, foosball, and darts, now the company's most popular product lines. Today, more than 13 million customers a year purchase Sportcraft products.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive outdoor game for the whole family April 8, 2010
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Length: 0:25 Mins
I've never cared much for horseshoes, so I wasn't expecting to be wowed by this game. However, once I started playing I found it was highly addictive. I've had the game set up for a few weeks now and and on several occasions my daughter has talked me into a game before I leave for work, or a game after work. The ladders are very lightweight and easy to move around. I like having two ladders so they can be set up a few feet from each other side by side.

This game makes it very easy to invent your own rules. My daughter decided that since the bottom rung on the ladder seems to be the hardest to score, her rules are as follows:

Stand about 8' back from the ladder.
With each set you move back one foot until you're about 20 feet back.
Each person gets their three turns, then it's the next persons turn.
Top rung earns 10 points
Middle rung earns 50 points
Bottom rung earns 100 points

If you get one ball on each rung your score automatically doubles.
First one to get to 1000 points wins.

She also said they play this game at school. The original rules are not too difficult to follow, but I like her creativity so we play by her house rules.

I know some other reviewers have complained of the balls being really hard if you're hit by one, and I imagine if you have a rowdy five year old that might happen. Luckily, that's nothing that I have to worry about.

The game is easy to assemble, easy to move around, and won't damage your lawn. This is a great starter set for beginning ladderball players, home use, and family reunion type events. If you're looking for a sturdy ladderball set that be played daily (such as for school P.E. class) you might want to invest a bit more on a sturdier set.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun lawn game, but not completely as advertised.... March 29, 2010
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Pros:

Easy to assemble. Took me about ten minutes out of the box following the directions provided.

Fun game, easy to play for just about any age range. You do have to throw and bend a lot, though, so be aware if you have any issues with those tasks. If you like horseshoes or washers, you'll probably like this. It's a laid-back sort of activity.

Mobile and easy to store. I just took the bottom stand rails off and plopped it in a corner, then I just put the bottom back on whenever we want to play. Takes up less space that way and it's easier to transport.

Cons:

The bolos are not soft as stated. The balls are hard like a golf ball, which is as it should be. You have to have some weight on the bolos to make them fly right. There is a plastic coating on the balls, but it doesn't really soften them. Be careful throwing around younger kids.

This is is NOT pipe grade PVC. It's fairly light and a little on the flimsy side. It's not too bad but I've seen roadside sets made from thicker PVC that will withstand a lot more punishment than this stand will. I don't know how long this set will last with repeated use. Like any PVC product, don't leave it out in the sunlight as it will eventually break the plastic down.

It's ok, but I'd build or buy a more sturdy set for long-term use. You might pick this up if you're looking to try the game out to see if you'd like it. These games are fun at school fairs or fund-raisers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, with some caveats June 25, 2010
Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This is an interesting, sometimes challenging game that sets up quickly, is easy to play, and is suitable for (older) children and adults alike. It makes a good break from the croquet and "corn hole" at summer parties and picnics, and because it is all hollow plastic, it travels well. The bola-type balls can be a little tricky to get the hang of, and I definitely think that players will need to be a little older, or at least, old enough to keep an eye out for young'uns who might wander into the playing area. Also, the box advertises the bola balls as "soft sponge", however, they are anything but. They are a hard, stiff, dense plastic, and they definitely would do some damage if slung hard enough (and heck, they're bolas, so they're easy to sling). All in all, this is a good product that when used properly is sure to provide many hours of outdoor family entertainment and fun.
