Editorial Reviews

Huey Lewis and The News' 1983 'Sports' album spawned four Top 10 hit singles - 'The Heart of Rock & Roll,' 'Heart & Soul,' 'I Want a New Drug,' 'If This is It,' and sold almost 10 million copies. To celebrate the blockbuster album's 30th anniversary, Lewis has personally overseen an expanded commemorative edition. Digitally remastered for CD 'Sports (30th Anniversary Edition)' pairs each of the original album's nine songs with choice live versions on a second disc, many of which have never before been released.

I remember the early to mid 80's very fondly. Some of my favorite pop albums (Rio, Thriller, Purple Rain, Reckless, Born In The USA, Pyromania, H2O etc...) were released during this time and "Sports" was one of them. Hearing "Heart & Soul" for the first time (of course it's highly entertaining video being that aforementioned time) was a revelation. This album soundtracked 1983-84 for me. I can't listen to "I Want A New Drug" without thinking of long summer days spent building forts in the woods with my brother. I can't hear "The Heart Of Rock & Roll" without reliving memories of going down to Wildwood with my family and running around on the beach. Of course I can't play "If This Is It" without thinking of riding bikes and playing ball with my friends. "Sports" is more than a collection of 9 great songs, it's a moment in time. A time capsule containing some great memories and feelings.
This 30th anniversary edition really brings a great deal of depth to the music. It's great to hear the tunes get the upgrade they deserve after 1999's subpar and bass heavy re-release. My only complaint about this set is the absence of the original 12" mixes. An updated remaster of some of these reworkings and rather rare mixes would've been a very welcome addition and there's more than enough empty space over the two disc set to have accommodated them. This complaint, however, is small and the album itself is so good that it's easy to look past. "Sports" is a classic and should be in every music lovers collection. If you haven't already, pick this up immediately. You won't regret it. Brilliant!!!

Great music back in the day - and it's still great. Bought this CD set for blasting in the car, and to remind me what a really brilliant bunch of musicians who love their work can do. So glad they are touring to celebrate this anniversary - one of the best live shows you'll see if you get the chance. Even after 30 years this music puts a smile on my face and feels like summer.

WOW 30 YEARS!!! Being a MTV kid I so remember getting this CASSETTE {YES kids a cassette} for my 13th birthday and I had wore out Huey`s Picture This album so i couldn`t wait for the new one to come out. "Heart and Soul" took MTV by storm and was a winner on Friday Night Fights for weeks and being 43 now when i hear "If this is It" it takes me to my cousins backyard playing throwing the ball around with my brother and swimming all day with my cousins, the album is just packed with classics "Bad is bad" "If this is It" Just a classic album and when i listen to it, It always makes me smile and takes me back to a more fun and innocent time. Thanks Huey

The live second disk makes the 30th Anniversary Edition of Sports a must have. Heart Of Rock And Roll & Heart And Soul are both terrific songs to start it off. I love the Cleveland reference Huey makes in Heart Of Rock And Roll. Heart and Soul is even more up tempo than the album version. Nice touch changing the "all you can eat for a $1.99" to "$5.99" in the live version of Bad Is Bad! The extended version of I Want A New Drug is the best song on the live CD. The bass beat is pulsating but not overbearing and Huey's "I don't like pills" extension of the "or come in a pill" lyric is hysterical! The band intros at the end of I Want A New Drug are great, especially the closing "and you've just heard the News"!. Walking On A Thin Line is a very underrated song that Huey doesn't play live much anymore so it was nice to hear it live on this CD. Finally Found A Home represents a musician's true feeling of what they do. If This Is It is a definite classic and the last true live song on the CD. You Crack Me Up and Honky Tonk Blues sound more like studio versions and don't have the same energy as the other seven songs on the live CD. Overall, this was money well spent. I can't wait for Fore to be given the same treatment!

There are very few albums and songs that are still standing as strong today, as they did back in the 80's. But at a time when soul and pop music was going more spaced out from albums like Michael Jackson's Thriller, old-fashioned soul music was not having a place anymore into the mainstream. But few artists showed real appreciation for that classic style at that time, like Billy Joel did with An Innocent Man. But it also helped to break a group out into the maintstream as well, with Huey Lewis & The News. The group had shown a feel good vibe that is still just as exciting to listen to now, as it was back in the 80's. Hard to believe, even though they haven't had a hit album since the 80's with Fore! and their breakthrough record Sports, those classic songs still stand the test of time well.

Huey Lewis & The News 30th Anniversary re-release of their breakthrough album Sports is still just as classic today, as it was back in 1983. The songs definitely still have the edge and feel-good rhythm of classic delights. The songs have all been remastered and sound fresh and invigorant as they were back then. The classic sounds of songs like Heart Of Rock And Roll, the delight harmony doo-wop styles of If This Is It, Heart & Soul, and the later-Ghostbusters sampled I Want A New Drug, and the deeply overlooked but upbeat Bad Is Bad. The album also includes a treat for die hard fans with a live album of those classic songs, that actually deliver nicely as a addition to the celebration. The live tracks are worth listening to, as a reminder of what had forgotten about for a long time, real joy to listen too all over again.

All in all, if you are new to Huey Lewis & The News, this is the album to go get.
