Sports stars literally jump from the pages of this unusual pop-up book. On each spread devoted to a different sport, a large photo springs into 3-D as the pages open. The extensive accompanying text includes biographical information about the athletes; historical overviews, such as “The Greatest Super Bowl Upsets”; profiles of other legendary figures in the sport; and quirky, themed sidebars, such as the “Sibling Revelry” feature, about great siblings in sports, which runs alongside a spread about the Williams sisters. Some of the text feels better suited for another format—a breakdown of the New York Giants Super Bowl XLII Miracle Drive, for example, might be better explained on an interactive Web site. On other pages, the text feels too cramped and dense. Another quibble: why two spreads on football but none on soccer? It’s the paper engineering more than the sports facts that will draw kids to these pages. This isn’t a necessary purchase, but the dramatic, eye-catching visuals make this a good browsing choice for reluctant readers. Grades 3-6. --Gillian Engberg
