Amazon.com Review

Sports Illustrated Magazine is one of the leading sports magazines in the world. Every issue features a wide range of sports-related articles and photographs, including columns written by the leading sports analysts and announcers. From previews of upcoming seasons to articles detailing the world behind the scenes, Sports Illustrated Magazine offers a one-of-a-kind look at your favorite players and teams.

Dan Patrick has one of the most popular radio shows in the country, and he brings his unique perspective and humorous side to the magazine with a monthly feature. Selena Roberts, Chris Ballard, and other leading journalists provide touching and memorable articles for the magazine, and the magazine also delves into investigative reporting, like it did with its article on steroids in the world of baseball.

Every subscription comes with the infamous swimsuit issue, which features some of the most beautiful models and female athletes posing on the cover and on the pages. Once you finish looking at that issue, you can jump into the Leading Off section, which provides photographs of major events and games. Sports Illustrated Magazine includes a section devoted to the top games from past years, excerpts from books written by athletes and celebrities, information about upcoming games, news on teams and players, and previews before each new major sports season begins, including baseball, hockey, football, and basketball.

Subscribing to Sports Illustrated Magazine lets you explore the world of sports from an insider's perspective, with features devoted to scandals, players making an impression, and memories of big games throughout history.

5.0 out of 5 stars "You're still the one . . ." July 21, 2005
Subscription Term Name:6 months
True story. I was a little kid, real little, and I picked up the very first copy of SI from my Dad's pile of newspapers, magazines and junk mail that Mom would throw out over the weekend. I saved it, and saved the rest of the weekly SI issues. Eventually my horde became too large for a small bedroom and I was stuck with saving one or two a month. You know that was a tough selection. Knicks yes; Mets no; Giants always. Teaches a young boy to be discriminating. I didn't have baseball cards in my Schwinn Racer. I HAD 250 ISSUES OF THE BEST SPORTS PICS IN HISTORY IN MY CLOSET.

Years pass. The boy becomes a man at least insofar as Draft Board #1 in Smithtown Long Island believes, and Mildred Yarusso sends me a ticket for my all expense paid tour of Vietnam. A year later, I return. So my life is a little chaotic, as one might expect, a little mecurial, a little off balance, a little noisy. You guys know what I'm talking about.

But one Christmas maybe that year, maybe the following year, I'm in my old bedroom. And I look in my closet, remembering that therein lay a fortune in pics of Floyd Patterson, a snarling Cassius Clay, Joe D (that's Dimagio, not Dumars), Willy, Roy C and, THEY'RE GONE. Mom, I yell, where are my SI's? "Oh, Larry," comes the response from downstairs, "they were so old I threw them out."

Well, it's OK. I mean Hell, all in all, I came out OK. But I still love the magazine. It still has the best writing around, Zimmermann, Reilly . . . the recent article on Jermaine Ewell by Jon Wertheim brought tears to my eyes. Only SI can do that . . . well, yeah, and the Red Sox losing. The sections, Faces in the Crowd, the Inside Sports columns. Like my brothers say, 'it's all good.' I look forward to the next 50. Oh. Yeah. The Swimsuit issue. What's the big deal? Who writes these anti-SI letters every year? Do you live in a cave? 5 Stars. Larry Scantlebury

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best by far November 23, 2014
By DJ
Subscription Term Name:1 year auto-renewal
SI has proven over the years that they are the dominant literary sports magazine. I have been reading them for nearly 7 years now, but unfortunately I will have to take a hiatus from the magazine as college is beginning and I do not have time or space for all the issues. That makes me sadder than one would expect.

This magazine blows ESPN mag out of the water. Sporting News is quality, but I do not think it can take SI. Chris Ballard is in my opinion the best sports journalist working today, and Pablo S. Torre, Austin Murphy, Ian Thompson, Lee Jenkins and Grant Wahl are all up there. Their articles are always interesting, with a touch of wit and plenty of interesting writing styles between them. Unlike ESPN, they do not stuff their stories with big charts depicting scales that are hard to understand. They write, they research, and they establish connections with their subjects. Ballard's article on the Tuscaloosa Tornados is possibly the best story I have read.

I have noticed that SI's layout has subtlety changed, and for the worse. Each issue is a tad thinner, and there are a few fancy modern layout schemes that make me think of ESPN. However, these are minuscule changes, and I still easily recommend SI over any other sports magazine in print. It seems the be the humane way they write. ESPN articles feel jumpy from point-to-point, and sometimes I feel like I learned nothing about the athlete being depicted. I liken them to high school english students who try to be poetic when talking, and end up confusing everyone else. SI stories have a sort of plot to them. Their articles trace through a period of time, and I usually read each story all the way through. Brilliant stuff.

After subscribing for 30 years, I recently cancelled. The too often focus on politically correct items, while becoming lite in the sports coverage, both became tiring.

1.0 out of 5 stars Double issues April 4, 2014

For the past several weeks I've received two copies of Sports Illustrated weekly. One with an expiration date this year and one next. I was under the impression you coordinated renewals to prevent this. So much for auto renewal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy Renewal - Christmas Gift December 18, 2014
By MBC
Subscription Term Name:1 year auto-renewal|Verified Purchase
My husband is a sports fanatic! Loves his weekly addition of Sports Illustrated, and all the articles/editorials contained in it. My renewal through them was nearly $50. Instead, I was able to subscribe through AMAZON for a fraction of that renewal fee! I will go this route annually.

His Christmas stocking will have a nice, much appreciated, surprise of Sports Illustrated! Awesome, all year-long, gift! Of sports news! I fully recommend this avenue for magazine gifts!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Great Long Form Writing February 14, 2013
Subscription Term Name:1 year auto-renewal
Sports Illustrated seems to have lost top of mind status with about 3 million ESPN channels, but I got a subscription a few months back and I have been really happy with my purchase.

A few of the big selling points for me have been really good long form articles, the digital subscription that comes with the paper subscription, and the fact that having a physical magazine presents me with coverage of sports that I might not regularly pay attention to.

can i skip swimsuit issue?
They give you the option to opt out of the swimsuit issue. I believe you can call and ask not to receive it.
