Forward: Youth sports have become an integral and vital aspect of American society. Opportunities within a given community for participation in youth sports have grown to include more children, and to provide a wider variety of sport experiences. Central to the success of the various programs that have developed has been, and continues to be the involvement of volunteer coaches and parents. Further, a successful program is one in which its volunteer coaches have received specialized training on coaching techniques, and in the legal, scientific, and medical foundations of the sport. Likewise, an informed and educated parent contributes to the overall health of the program and its young athletes.Coaches and parents often have questions and concerns relating to various aspects of youth sports, but are frequently faced with a situation in which they do not know who to ask, or where to go for answers. Typical questions might include the following:What is my legal liability as a coach?, What should my athletes or my children be eating to best prepare for their sport?, Should I be concerned about my athletes' or my children's weight?, How can I best condition my athletes or my children for their sport? Should I encourage distance running? Strength training? How extensive a medical examination should be required for participation in any given sport?, What if one of my athletes or my children is injured? What care should be given? Who should we see? How can we be referred to a specialist?, Who should determine when an injured child can safely return to participation, and on what basis should this decision be made? The realization that coaches and parents do have a number of important questions and concerns that are not easily answered was the driving force for the development of this book. This book was written by a group of experts in sport law, sports medicine, and sports science, to provide the volunteer coach and the parent with basic information relating to each of their specialties. Each of the experts was given the challenge of writing a brief overview of his/her area of specialization, with information which is practical and interesting. Translating legal, medical, and scientific information into a readable and practical format is the mark of a successful book of this type. The editor and contributing authors are to be congratulated on hitting the mark! The editor and authors have worked hard to provide an informative and practical document. Now, the ball is in your court! By reading and using this book, your responsibilities as a youth sports coach and/or parent should be made easier and more enjoyable.(Jack H.
