Editorial Reviews

From Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme, the creative masterminds behind The West Wing and Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip, comes Sports Night, an innovative half-hour program about the team of smart people responsible for putting on a nightly live sports news show. They arre funny, disciplined, capable and fast-thinking, a group of consummate professionals, except when it comes to their personal lives.

Combining the storytelling talents of Sorkin and Schlamme and unforgettable performances by Josh Charles (In Treatment), Robert Guillaume (Benson), Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), Sabrina Lloyd (Sliders) and Joshua Malina (The West Wing), the first season of Sports Night defined a new style and raised the bar for all television programs to follow.

Sports Night is an intelligent comedy that rarely uses "slapstick" antics for a laugh, but relies instead on the clever, witty, rapid-fire dialogue. This show is quite a bit more light-hearted than West Wing, and doesn't delve into deep political topics, but it does often touch on a subject that will make you think, and quite possibly inspire you. It earned several Emmy nominations, and was declared by TV Guide as "Rookie of the Year" and "Best Show You're Not Watching".

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A SPORTS FAN TO LOVE THIS SHOW! I have friends who don't care for sports at all, but would absolutely never miss an episode. Sorkin masterfully integrates sports as a background, and weaves it into an occasional amusing subplot; but this show is about the relationships and interactions among the characters, not about the sports they cover.

And yet I don't recommend you buy this particular product (Season One). Why? Because for a few dollars more you can get the entire series (Seasons One and Two), and I can almost guarantee that when you're done with the first season you're going to want to watch the second one.

RATING/CONTENT: There's no rating in the product info, and I don't know what the TV people gave the show for rating/content, but here's my assessment:
--Violence: none, except when you get laughing so hard your sides hurt. TV-G
--Language: I can't specifically remember any swearing; if there is, it's certainly mild compared to many tv shows. There is some innuendo, however. TV-PG
--Sex: referenced in dialogue only, no graphic scenes at all; this show is about relationships, not sex, though some sexual references are made. Probably TV-PG, at worst TV-14

Many reviewers hit the highlights of this show: witty, intelligent dialog; talented cast and well-developed characters; funny and substantial at the same time. It is still relevant today - I find myself repeating lines from this show often in my job. And it's true, you don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy it.

Specifically about the DVDs, I had the first set of DVDs and replaced them with the 10th anniversary edition. The director and actor commentaries, plus the other extras, made it worth it if you are a fan of this show.

Haven't seen Sports Night or any of Aaron Sorkin's other shows? Give this a try if you like The Good Wife (which also features Josh Charles), or if you roll your eyes at morning radio shows. Highly recommended.

I only recently discovered Sports Night thanks to a friend. What a great TV show. Cast is fantastic and writing is very well done. Typical fast-paced Sorkin dialog, but still feels fresh thanks to the quality of the material, light-hearted approach and enjoyable cast.

Sports Night is a mix of comedy and drama, featuring plenty of laughs, but also blending a serious element around the personal difficulties of various cast members. You don't have to be a sports fan, as that is not the focus of the show, but they do a great job capturing the excitement of live television.

Felicity Huffman is absolute solid gold. She creates an interesting, funny, sensitive and complex portrait of the show producer. The two anchors are also excellent, as is Joshua Molina. There are no real weak links, everyone plays their role effectively.

Season One starts out strong, building in the early middle to some absolutely fantastic episodes. Those are followed by one overly talkative, off-form, stage dialog episode that feels out of place, but then it takes off again to a strong conclusion. Season Two also ends very strong, the show definitely evolving in it second season.

This is a show that flew under the wire, but definitely deserves consideration as one of the greats. Shame it only lasted two seasons.

Nice original show. One with a heart, script, and good cast of actors that have since gone on to some fame. When it aired originally there was no laugh track. Too bad this had been added in this version.

We were loving the show and watching a couple of episodes every night...

Then it was pulled from the Prime lineup. So sad. Guess I'll get the DVDs from the library to finish it.

Have viewed just six episodes free with my Amazon Prime but now they've slapped a fee on viewing the first season so while happy with the series, unhappy with Amazon

Though somewhat of an unknown series, Sports Night was written by Aaron Sorkin, who went on to create The West Wing. Several of the actors from Sports Night went on to have roles in The West Wing, but what most clearly carried over is the writing and production style. It is clear that Sorkin honed his skills showcased in The West Wing in this show, which makes it very enjoyable to watch at the same time as it engages the viewer with great character development. Though the stories here may not always touch on issues as important as those dealt with on The West Wing, there are some good commentaries on our culture, specifically as it relates to the world of athletes and celebrities.

Definitely worth watching at least once, especially since it's available for free on Amazon Prime Video with a Prime membership!

Why the re-release of Season 1?
I agree, but at least this is going to have extras on it that wasn't on the original releases. Don't know if they are on the 10th anniversary one though. I have the regular yellow box set.
