About the Author

Dr. Mark Baugh received his undergraduate training at San Jose State University, where he earned his BA degree in Biological Science with a concentration in Cell Physiology, and minor in Chemistry. He took 10 units in Nutrition Science as a postgraduate, also at SJSU, and received his Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree in Clinical Pharmacy at the University of the Pacific. As part of his Pharmacy training, he has had hospital clinical courses in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Baugh has spent almost 18 years in the laboratory, working in pharmaceutical and environmental chemistry R&D and testing. He has also authored a number of articles and given scientific seminars about the corrosive atmosphere of planet Earth due to its abundance of free oxygen. In his articles Dr. Baugh has shown both colleagues and students, worldwide, the amazing relationship between evolutionary biology and certain vitamins and minerals in detoxifying oxygen for our survival, as well as how oxygen is used by the body as a weapon against foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. His interest in nutrition actually began about the same time he started working in the laboratory, 1972. It was at this time that Dr. Baugh started paying attention to what he overheard layman saying about nutrition at supermarkets, health food stores, and at the gym. Much of what the public thinks they know about nutrition, he says, comes from books and articles written by authors without authentic scientific credentials. Almost all he hears people talk about is nutrition nonsense. He wrote this book to teach the public the truth about nutrition and how chronic exercise can keep you healthy and looking great at any age.

Dr. Baugh started working out seriously over 20 years ago and, though now 53, his body never looked better (although his face has). He lives what he says in this book every day. Together with his academic background, he is in an excellent position to discuss nutrition in relation to sports.

Dr. Baugh is currently working on his next book, Sports Nutrition: The Good News, and several other projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars A timely, good-sense book, April 8, 2000
This review is from: Sports Nutrition: The Awful Truth (Paperback)
It's about time someone exposed the "Awful Truth" about so many over-the-counter potions and preparations that do so little good, if any, in helping to build strong bodies in men and women. Dr. Baugh's book "Sports Nutrition: The Awful Truth" blasts the assumption that just by ingesting certain special concoctions that are readily available in some health-food stores, one can build up the body so it can run faster, lift heavier weight, or grow muscle more easily. According to the biography on the book cover, Dr. Baugh is a credible, highly-educated, expert on nutrition, and is a Clinical Pharmacist, with training and experience in biological science, cell physiology, chemistry, and nutrition science. He maintains that simply getting proper nutrition in your diet, plus vigorous exercise, is the secret to building a really fit body, and at a much lower cost than taking high-priced, overly-touted, preparations that have little or no benefit. Dr Baugh describes how the vitamins and minerals really work in the body, and that metabolism gets elevated after 20 minutes of continuous exercise, and remains elevated long after exercise stops. The photograph of Dr. Baugh's 50+ year-old really-great body, shown on the back cover of this book, remarkably testifies to the fact that the regimin of good nutrition and proper exercise has worked for him to produce fantastic results. I highly recommend this amazing, good-sense, perhaps controversial book.

A wonderful and extensive collection, on a wealth of topics relating to personal nutrition, and fitness. What I liked most about this book, is the wonderful layout, it has diagrams, pictures, boarders, and so much more! Dr. Baugh has obviously done extensive research into sports nutrition, and this is a book EVERYONE should have. There is nothing being sold, no off the wall ideas, Its just a book of information that can help even the most seasoned body builder.

A Wonderful book, superbly written, and easy to understand.
