A timely, good-sense book,
By
This review is from: Sports Nutrition: The Awful Truth (Paperback)
It's about time someone exposed the "Awful Truth" about so many over-the-counter potions and preparations that do so little good, if any, in helping to build strong bodies in men and women. Dr. Baugh's book "Sports Nutrition: The Awful Truth" blasts the assumption that just by ingesting certain special concoctions that are readily available in some health-food stores, one can build up the body so it can run faster, lift heavier weight, or grow muscle more easily. According to the biography on the book cover, Dr. Baugh is a credible, highly-educated, expert on nutrition, and is a Clinical Pharmacist, with training and experience in biological science, cell physiology, chemistry, and nutrition science. He maintains that simply getting proper nutrition in your diet, plus vigorous exercise, is the secret to building a really fit body, and at a much lower cost than taking high-priced, overly-touted, preparations that have little or no benefit. Dr Baugh describes how the vitamins and minerals really work in the body, and that metabolism gets elevated after 20 minutes of continuous exercise, and remains elevated long after exercise stops. The photograph of Dr. Baugh's 50+ year-old really-great body, shown on the back cover of this book, remarkably testifies to the fact that the regimin of good nutrition and proper exercise has worked for him to produce fantastic results. I highly recommend this amazing, good-sense, perhaps controversial book.

A wonderful and extensive collection, on a wealth of topics relating to personal nutrition, and fitness. What I liked most about this book, is the wonderful layout, it has diagrams, pictures, boarders, and so much more! Dr. Baugh has obviously done extensive research into sports nutrition, and this is a book EVERYONE should have. There is nothing being sold, no off the wall ideas, Its just a book of information that can help even the most seasoned body builder.A Wonderful book, superbly written, and easy to understand.

First, I must say that if I were a body-builder, I would probably give this book 5 stars. As it is, I am only a person interested in nutrition and fitness, but I'm really sick of the books that try to sell me something - whether it's an idea (usually a cult regimen) or products (usually the required supplies for the cult regimen). This book doesn't sell, it gives it away. Real information about the body, how it uses nutrients, and what foods and supplements are good sources of needed nutrients. Dr. Baugh knows his chemistry and physiology and can communicate that knowledge to those of us without the degrees. His style is relaxed and humorous - but the subject is serious - my health and well-being. And the information is immediately useful. Thanks, Dr. B.!

This book is just awful,

This review is from: Sports Nutrition: The Awful Truth (Paperback)
I purchased this book because sports nutrition is a personal and vocational interest of mine, since I work as a professional health, medicine, and nutrition writer. This makes me familar with the latest research in sports nutrition, and I can verify after reading this book that you won't find the latest data here. The book has very few references, and the conclusions drawn by the author seem to be more based on his personal opinion than anything else. Even worse: he comes across as an elitist snob, yet makes errors to egregious that I question his knowledge of the subject. While it's true that the food supplement industry is often heavy into hype, Baugh condemns many products that he clearly knows nothing about, nor did he bother even researching them for this book. At the beginning of the book, he even denies the existence of sports nutrition itself! Anyone with any sense will save their money on this garbage book. You will learn absolutely nothing from it.

Awful,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sports Nutrition: The Awful Truth (Paperback)
The book is very easy reading and some of the basic information is fine (vitamins and how they help the body). There are no studies sited in the book that proves what he states about supplements though. They are his opinions. His advice about working out is terrible! I am an exercise physiologist and he gives down right terrible info about exercise. Matter of fact, with this info you can hurt yourself. Be ware readers.
