Book Description

This is the first book written for community coaches of youth sports teams who want to teach their young athletes more than just how to kick and throw and hit. Developing positive character values in children can be enhanced by incorporating the PLUS system of coaching. Specific, easy to follow guidelines and tips can be immediately used by coaches to create sports programs in which all children-regardless of their athletic ability-learn to develop their athletic skills while having fun and increasing self-esteem and confidence.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"In this book, Jeffrey Beedy has given us readers the benefit of his considerable wisdom-his long experience as an athlete, a coach, a teacher, a headmaster, a husband and a father this book will prove valuable, for sure, to thousands of parents and coaches and to the young people whom they are meant to instruct and inspire. In page after page we are offered so very much wisdom-hints and suggestions about how we might be more honorable and decent human beings." From the foreword by Dr. Robert Coles

"If a child or young athlete has the good fortune to be influenced by a succession of coaches who have embraced the Sports PLUS model and philosophy, it is possible that she or he could develop into an All-American, in life, without ever participating in a winning game. If my sons were enrolling in a sports program today, I would hand the coach a copy of Sports PLUS along with the traditionally requested liability release." Gary Beban, Heisman Trophy Winner, 1967

We all hope that our children will benefit from playing on a sports team. What parent would not want their child to learn positive character values from playing on a youth sports team? Even more, what if their children learned how to attach those values to specific behaviors and attitudes and then began to transfer those behaviors to life away from the playing field? The PLUS approach suggests that, much like an academic classroom, the sports environment can be organized in ways that enhance learning. Instead of chaos, the PLUS Learning Cycle provides coaches with a structure that incorporates effective principles of learning. It offers practical tools for creating an environment in which children quickly feel comfortable and coaches can effectively teach.
