This style manual supplements the small section on sportswriting in the Associated Press Stylebook. It is divided into two parts. Part 1 is an alphabetical list of words used in sports stories that provides correct spelling, part of speech, usage, and a definition, if necessary. Entries for sports and teams note events, major tournaments, and corporate sponsors. For example, the entry heptathlon lists the seven events. It also states that this term replaced pentathlon as the track and field term in 1988; other sources give the date as 1981. This section concludes with a punctuation guide specific to sports terms.

Part 2, alphabetically arranged by sport, covers more than 50 sports from Archery to Wrestling. Each entry provides common terms used in the sport, the governing body, an example of the scoring, and lists of leagues and teams, when appropriate. Part 2 also includes the section "Frequently Misspelled Names" of athletes. More than 30 books used to compile the usage rules are cited. These sources include newspapers, rulebooks such as National League Green Book and Official Rules of Major League Baseball, and such reference books as Webster's Sports Dictionary and Elements of Style by Strunk and White.

While this specialized source is primarily aimed at sportswriters, it will have some use in a public library situation as a reference book.
