Book Description

July 15, 2007
Whether you're a professional athlete, weightlifter, sports enthusiast, or just beginning to work out, you've probably thought about using supplements to enhance your training or hasten recovery from injuries. But one look at the supplement section at the health food store or at your gym may have given you second thoughts. There are so many sports supplements available today: protein powders, amino acids for muscle building, fat-burner nutrients,, and so on. You may have wondered, do I really need to take supplements? Which ones should I take? And how do I know the good one from the not-so-good ones? This book will help you sort through the overwhelming array of sports supplements and come up with a supplement regimen to fit your specific needs and goals. For the active person, it is vital to maintain a good nutrient intake to avoid basic nutritional deficiencies, help prevent injuries, promote the health of specific body systems, and accomplish training goals such as building muscle mass or burning fat. "The Sports Supplement Buyer's Guide" provides a unique integrated approach to supplmentation for athletes, including essential nutrients for building a strong body and supplements for specific fitness goals: fat loss, muscle builing, increased endurance, and hormone control. Plus, there's advice on selecting, buying, and taking supplements in order to reap the most benefits. Supplement programs tailored to the physical requirements of specific sports are also included.

As a formulator of dietary supplements and sports nutrition products, I have collection of hundreds of books and scientific journals on nutrition. I found this book to be an excellent desk reference on sport supplements. It is concise, easy to understand and full of the "need to know" information that will give you the honest truth on the ingredients and products that are available in your sports nutrition and health food stores. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about educating themselves regarding performance nutrition or those who just want results!

Just finished reading this book. It really is an amazing source of information for anyone who is serious about their health, nutrition, and athleticism. What I like is that much of the information on supplements is backed by notable research. I would recommend it to athletes and anyone else looking to enhance their performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely valuable to the avid athlete, August 28, 2007
This review is from: Sports Supplement Buyer's Guide: Complete Nutrition for Your Active Lifestyle (Paperback)
This book contains extremely pertinent information on supplements that athletes commonly use. I am currently in the process of training for my next triathlon and have found a lot of information contained in this book extremely valuable. My workouts consist of swimming, cycling, running, and power lifting, and it has been very difficult to find the exact supplements needed to support this regimen. Adele and Jalali have taken very technical information and translated into easy to understand terms for people that don't have a biology/chemistry based educational background without compromising communicating the details of how the human body functions with respect to the given supplement.

I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to use supplements to support their workout regimen. With a slough of information all over the internet, this book can be a single "go to" reference for someone looking for information without all getting caught up with all the misinformation online.
