The Favorite Spot Book,
By
This review is from: Spot Goes to the Beach (Hardcover)
My nephew, Philip, is 15 months old and this is his most favorite Spot book and most favorite book in general. Each time it is read to him, he squeals with delight at all of the pictures - especially the ones behind the flaps that he insists on carefully peeling back by himself. His parents, nanny, brother, grandparents and I have read this book to him so many times that the flaps have fallen out from his extensive flipping (nothing that tape or Elmer's Glue can't fix). This book is so well loved that Philip often wants to sleep with it in his crib! Perhaps a new copy is an order! Hear that, Santa?

This is one of the best Spot books. My baby loves lifting the flaps and looking at the cute animals. It is on par with Where Is Spot the classic. Makes me want to pack up the wagon and head out to the beach!

Tone and dialogue NOT typical of most Spot books,
By Mom of 3 great boys (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spot Goes to the Beach (Board book)
We're long-time Spot fans in our family of 3 children (2-12); so, I was surprised by the negative tone of the story line and some accompanying illustrations in this one. An angry hippo scowls and grumps at Spot twice (for accidently bumping into her in the water when walking backwards and for mistakenly taking her towel instead of his at the end). With these innocent mistakes, I'd have expected something more along the lines of "Whoa--careful!" and/or oops--sorry! instead of the harsh/grabby reactions. The hippo looks a lot like an older Helen or Helen's Mom, making it even more uncharacteristic. If I'd have browsed this in a bookstore, I would not have purchased it. Although the paperback flap book is 2003 release, I see now it was originally published in 1985..so maybe that's why.
[Still a Spot/Eric Hill fan...but not one of this book and will more carefully screen others before buying.]

Didn't meet our expectations.,

Typically my family likes Spot but the "story" isn't here. There is no continuity. Boring. My 3 year old left the room and didn't even bother lifting all of the flaps. : (

The Spots series are wonderful for little ones!,

If your little one loves lifting the flaps like mine does, then this is for you! The flaps are pretty sturdy and conceal little treasures for your infant/toddler to lift. The squeals that greet each opened flap makes these lift the flap books a worthy splurge!

We love Spot The Dog,
By Deanna Hockey (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spot Goes to the Beach (Paperback)
Spot the Dog books are a favourite with my girls. They love the simple stories that they can relate to (hiding, baking a cake, playing with others etc) and the lift-the-flaps always bring screams of delight even though we've read them many many times. As they grow I'm sure they'll be one of the books they learn to read with. The words are simple and the font easy to read. Lovely books to cuddle up with your children on your lap. They are also big enough to hold up and read to them as they sit in back seat on car trips.

We have a couple of the Spot books which my toddler daughter likes well enough, however they don't hold her attention particularly. And as the person reading them, I find they don't stand up to repeated readings as well as many of her other books. (I am thinking of the series by Sandra Boynton, which seem to fare better.)

WE love the Spot books, especially the lift the flap one. Toddlers seem to love the hide and seek reading and this book is really cute.

James loves this book. When he comes, with Mummy and Daddy, to the UK in 12 days time, we shall be going to the beach and it will mean so much more. We are all looking forward to it very much. I shall be able to read "Spot goes to the beach" to James when he goes to bed.

Favorite book for beginner readers,

This is a great book for little children. The text is simple and the flaps provide answers to questions in the story. The board book format is easy for children to use without the worry of ripped pages. The size is appropriate for pudgy little hands.
