Caveat emptor: this does not contain Stafford's '50s pop hits like "Shrimpboats Are A-Comin'" or "Jambalaya". Instead, this concentrates on her career as a standards singer for Capitol in the early '50s. Miraculously, it even dented the Billboard Top 200! A fine selection of standards, wonderfully heavy on the slower stuff. The arrangements (largely by hubby Paul Weston) are understated and dignified, and Stafford proves she can hold her own with anybody in the great American songbook sing-off. For those who first came to this style via Harry Connick, Jr., this disc is a wonderful next step. --Skip Heller

This is an excellent introduction tothe artistry of Jo and her husbandconductor/arranger Paul Weston. Agreat selection of ballads, swingsongs, and standards, with appearances by the likes of the mu-sically superior vocal group The Pied Pipers and Nat King Cole willmake you see why Jo, with her perfect pitch and phrasing was so popular.Paul Weston, Jo's husband and theconductor/arranger of most of herwork shows his skill and craftman-ship here. Anyone who compares hiswork to the corny schmaltz of a Lawrence Welk is simply not list-ening. When Johny Mercer foundedCapitol Records in 1942, he hiredWeston to be his A&R director (ANDhe hired Stafford as his first solovocalist for the label), and JM newquality...

.... This is a great collection of Jo's songs from 1943 to 1950. The ... reviewer obviously didn't look at the liner notes to see that the songs on this disc are all from the mid forties through 1950. Even though this isn't a true collection of her hits (this isn't a greatest hits compilation), each one is a gem and Jo sounds fantastic throughout. Mostly ballads, lots of schmaltzy horns--if you like schmaltzier 40's pop then get this album, otherwise skip it and don't complain. The arrangements and song selections are stellar, my favorites being "I didn't know about you," "Walkin' my baby back home," "Haunted heart." If you read the track selection, you'll see that many of the songs are familiar tunes (if you know anything about songs from that era) and were also recordered by other artists. My only complaint is that there aren't enough tunes here! You can get other Jo cds with many more songs for a similiar price. Get this disc and the Capitol Collectors Series for 1940's Jo without any of the same songs repeated, and you should be as happy a I.

Jo Stafford, the GI's favorite female voice, is in her throaty glory here on this selection of hits. Especially good is a bass-laced In the Still of the Night. Also worth listening to are some tunes that are heard too rarely, The Boy Next Door and Sugar.

Jo's voice and stylings can't be faulted, but the Lawrence Welk-ian arrangements by Weston's orchestra are embarrassing. Tune selections are uninspired. Only the couple of cuts with the Pied Pipers have any sparkle. Listening to this album is like eating 20 Hostess Twinkies.
