This review is from: Moon Spotlight Shasta and Lassen Camping and Hiking (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from my local library to find a good backpacking trail in Lassen National Forest for a 3 day trip. I ended up choosing Cypress Trailhead in to Eiler Lake. The description gave me no real information on the features of the trail--as well as no tips on which trail to follow on the many forks. I didn't get lost, but I was stymied by the very steep mile-long ascent at the start of this trail--and the difficult loose rock trail substrate. Once I'd camped at my destination, I learned from a ranger that the Tamarack Trailhead provides a much more gradual ascent, even though the road in is rougher. I was frustrated that the book didn't tell me anything about the trail difficulty besides the little number at the start of the listing--and it listed Tamarack as more difficult! Hmm.
